They have to make the justice system seem interesting to sell it.

It gives the viewing public the opportunity to see people who are much dumber than they are, and to take glee in seeing the bad decisions those dumber people make, and the ridiculous arguments surrounding the resulting vortices of imbecility.

The "judges" are nothing more than a means to establish a suitable forum for the combatants.

I used to enjoy judge Wapner. There was a juivvie court "Judge" show on channel 10 in Columbus, Ohio... i figured out it was drama, not reality.

Why is there so many "Judge" shows on daytime tv?
(1) They're cheap to produce
(2) They're very popular because
(2a) there's an illusion that justice is being served, though sometimes it is
(2b) people like watching other people's misery & airing of their dirty laundry
(2c) the 'judges' can dispense 'sentences' without neccesarily following the strict rules of law, especially regarding evidence
(3) You can't write stuff this good
(4) Once one or two became a hit, copycats trying to cash in were inevitable

And to be fair, the vast majority of 'judges' are retired jurists, and do try to adjucate the 'cases' fairly.

The real question is, why do so many maroons volunteer for shows like these (and shows like Jerry Springer's etc.) and then seem surprised that they're humiliated on national television?

"(2b) people like watching other people's misery & airing of their dirty laundry"

That belongs in the number one slot. Haven't you noticed they're game shows in disguise? Read the "fine print" in the closing credit roll, here's how it works. Both parties are paid to appear on the show and the "judgement" is paid from a "fund" rather than by the losing party. It's a win-win situation for the winner, he gets the judgement in addition to what he's paid to appear. Even if you lose you still come out a winner so drop your case in Superior Court, it's the People's Court that's superior.

Oh, Judge Wapner was funny being an ex Marine but Judge Kotch was funnier, there's just a certain je ne seis quoi about an ex New York Mayor. Then came Judge Sheindlin boring me to hiatus, finally Judge Milan rekindled my interest. Hey, wouldn't she light a fire under YOU? I can't leave you without imparting this little plum, when Jerry Sheindlin married Judy Blum our beloved acid tongued witch Judge Judy was born.

These days I can just go to the flea market and buy stuff off highjacked semi's. The police presence there is nil since the all the cut backs by the governor after it was almost a requirement for years that they be there.

Here's a kicker.. Judge Judy is the #1 syndicated daytime TV show in the country. Go figure. My Dad loves her.. I think he considers it the biggest benefit of retirement, being able to watch JJ.
