It's never too early to get the rig set up to work a little picnic table portable JT-65 on 15M. It helps that the wife and child are off on some sort of guided nature hike as well.

Fuck that "nature" shit, work them digital modes!

BTW, I use a SignaLink USB as well. Nice little unit.

Yeah, the USB version is a lot better than the SL1+. I'm a lot happier with the pots to adjust levels than I ever was using the sliders in the software.

The nature stuff isn't too bad. I went for a walk with the girls just a bit ago. Here are a couple of the photos I snapped:

I see you use a "beverage" antenna?

Neat.

I used to do something like that with a touring bike, an HW-8 and a few station peripherals. Power was obtained from the battery (a water-cooled motorcycle can idle indefinitely, acting as a generator...providing its cooling system in in good shape) and a wire thrown into a tree served as an antenna.

Would be nice to reprise that effort with a KX1 or similar.

Looks like chilled legumes. I'm wondering if our group will be able to get it together for FD this year.

No field day for me this year. My youngest is going to nationals for gymnastics and it happens to land right on FD weekend. No wiggle room to get out of that. Kelli and her back will have nothing on me after spending two days in bleacher seating to watch a total of 8 minutes of gymnastics.

Good luck to you and your youngest. Good luck to your back too.

Camping and radio go together perfectly! Set up on the table, hook up to the mobile antenna and car battery....Fun!!!!

Nice pics. Been a while since I saw Leopard Frogs au natural. The others are great, too.

There were LOTS of frogs. I mentioned to my wife that they seemed to be of near biblical plague proportion there. We also came upon a turtle that was laying eggs. Lots of birds, squirrels, etc.

I was using my plug in power supply there as we had commercial power available. If it isn't, I have a 20W solar panel and a powerpole pigtail on the camper battery. I can operate that was for a long time. Just can't run the a/c and that was a necessity the last couple of days.

No, you can't call it Hamping. If you did, we will all be forced to air out our dirty laundry. Cuz we would be "Hampers??"

Hamping....sounds great! Now, if i bring my wife, can it just revert back to Humping?

No, wait...ill be too busy on the radio, that will kill the mood.

Hamping it is! :-D

A good ham radio operator needs to get a taste for his microphone. He needs to lick the microphone and get a taste for his rig.

OK, at the risk of throwing the thread further off track, how about German made collectables commemorating Field Days. We could call them "Hammel" Figures. Sorry, I know that was bad, but I'm desperately pulling up on the yoke to get us out of this crash dive into the gutter. :)

Flip that pig over and taste it and tell us if it's ready.

I think thats Fonatio. You may be thinking of gammalingus, where you get your beam and work over the matching unit. I dunno, i lose track of all these things...those contests can get long and lonely sometimes.

I plan on doing some camping this summer and I plan to take my rig with me. I have one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/80-10-Meter-HF-Stealth-Portable-End-Fed-Wire-Antenna-/170847213536?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c74997e0#ht_956wt_1344 and if that doesn't work well, I'll split the wires and turn it into a dipole. I might build a Delta Loop for 20M as well.

I've looked at those. Even tried my hand at making them. You'll have to let us know how it works out for you.

This is the antenna I use:

That looks like a cool antenna. How well does it work? I'll let you know how mine works. I suspect it wont be very good, but then you never really know until you try it and I have the thing for 2 years and never tried it. Maybe this weekend.

For a hunk of wire that took all of 2 minutes to stick up in the air...not bad at all.

I usually string wires between the trees, the FD site is about 100'. i also put a 2M, and 6M Ringo up about 40 ft in the other trees. We all bring our gas generators, I operate QRP most of the time. Did I mention the bong comes out in the evening? I brought my daughter, and granddaughter to my last hamping session. They where bored without a tv. I was having fun working QRP.

Not a smoker myself, but alcoholic beverages on the other hand is my poison of choice. I think I've been lucky to have survived FD a few years. I do know I can work a phenomenal amount of PSK at 2AM with a BAC that could kill a normal human being and still be up cooking breakfast by sunrise.

Finally got the video put together. I'm no 'OIK when it comes to video production, but I think I do OK for a farmboy turned carpenter shooting with an Ipod Touch.

Hell no, that's the best time to bring them. Teach them to cut wood and that gives a guy more time to work the bands and drink beer. Of course there is the Bobbit school of thought on that...
