Is it possible she may have lived as a castaway for several years?
... sans freckle cream?

I read this the other day on another site and heard about it on NPR. Interesting for sure. Amelia is one of my heroes. According to NPR, apparently she wasn't well-liked by the military, which may have contributed to her never being found.

Everybody knows that women can't fly planes or drive cars or, (god forbid) ride a motorcycle. A woman riding a motorcycle? THAT'S JUST OBSCENE! Think of the children!

You should see me with my youngest on my bike. She's going to take after me, for sure. She is fearless and loves riding with me. She's a sassy one too, like her ma.

Well, you got the motorcycles and the children covered. Good thinking!

Credible radio Signals Ignored from Earhart's Plane (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47653021/ns/technology_and_science-science/)
Dozens of previously dismissed radio signals were actually credible transmissions from Amelia Earhart, according to a new study of the alleged post-loss signals from Earhart's plane. The transmissions started riding the air waves just hours after Earhart sent her last in-flight message.
The study, presented on Friday at a three day conference by researchers of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), sheds new light on what may have happened to the legendary aviator 75 years ago. The researchers plan to start a high-tech underwater search for pieces of her aircraft next July.
"Amelia Earhart did not simply vanish on July 2, 1937. Radio distress calls believed to have been sent from the missing plane dominated the headlines and drove much of the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy search," Ric Gillespie, executive director of TIGHAR, told Discovery News.

"We can not exclude the possibility that someone brought a jar of American women's freckle cream to a British-administered island where nobody had freckles -- but it doesn't seem very likely," Gillespie said.
The jar was found broken in five pieces and one of the fragments was collected far from the others amongst some turtle bones.
"It shows signs of having been used as a cutting tool -- so the jar does seem to have been associated with the castaway who died there," Gillespie said.
One of the things it would be interesting to know is at what depth these items appear.
