Can anyone recomend a replacement transceiver for my Radioshack htx-10? I'd like one thats comparable to htx-10 if there is one.I only use ssb on it.

Find another one, or an HTX-100. Stick with "designed-specifically-as-ham rigs", they are built better.

That being said, there's something special about a Connex witha Rebel Faceplate, eh?

HTX-10 and HTX-100s show up on eBay pretty regularly. Like everything else ham radio related there, they usually go for more than they're worth but if you wait long enough sometimes you can land a deal.

Albrecht 485(?). It's a copy of the HTX-10.

Yea, there's an older Magnum 10 meter only rig that has the HTX guts in it. Don't remember the model.

HR2510/2600.

Converted CB rig.

Ten-Tec Scout.

Did Mizuho or NGC make a 10M monobander at one time?

257. There's a minor difference between the HTX-10, 257, and Albrecht 485 - The HTX-10 had a programming fuse blown, to prevent switching between 11/10; and was only able to to 10 meters. The other two can switch between 10 only, and 10/11 operations. Otherwise, they are the same (Magnum 257 also has a blue backlight).

I bought the HTX-10 for $50 from a hamfest at the bottom of the solar cycle. I have a HTX-100 I bought for $30 from Radioshack on clearance (!!!) Nice little rigs.

btw you should troll radioshack from time to time. You will never believe the gems you get. In the early '00s I looked at the RS stores in NYC and found quite a few things. I even got a PRO-2080 trunk tracker base scanner for $20.

Yeah, that's more common than not. You understand how proxy bidding works, right?

No,I'm new to ebay.

No,I'm new to ebay.

Ah, okay. Let me see if I can avoid botching this explanation.

Let's say an item comes up for auction on eBay. Seller lists it for 99 cents, open bid. Anyone can bid any amount.

eBay imposes bid increments, based on the current bidding price. Under $50, the bid increment might be 50 cents. $100-$200, it might be $1. (I'm not sure what the increments are today, so let's "just say.")

You come along and think the item is worth a maximum of $15. Since that's all it's worth to you, you go ahead and bid $15. This is where the proxy bidding kicks in. Since the current price of the item is 99 cents and the increment is 50 cents, the bid is now at $1.49 and you're the current winner. eBay will now "manage" your bid up to $15.

Some bozo comes along and bids $4.50. His bid is now trumped by yours automatically and the bid now stands at $5.00 ($4.50 + the increment). You're still winning because you've authorized eBay to automatically bid on your behalf (a proxy) up to $15. The other guy was only willing to pay $4.50.

At the end of this same auction, the bid is still at $5.00. Three seconds before it ends, I decide to bid $10. I submit my bid in the last second. You win it for $10.50 (My bid plus the increment). You won it because your bid was higher than mine and eBay ran the bids on your behalf. This is proxy bidding and why you lose at the last second.

FWIW, I think this is completely fair. I've read lots of eBay complaints, but I've never had much in the way of problems with them. Bid on a "fixer upper" camera lens the other day. Worth maybe $30 to me as a bargain and that's what I bid. Sold for a little under $120 in the last minute. I'm somehow okay with that. ;)

I think I'll give up on ebay.Thats just not my cup of tea.I found a htx-100 for less than I would have paid for the 10,and I think I'll like it better.

The HTX-10 and HTX-100 both have their pluses, and both have their minuses. It's merely personal preference. The 100 doesn't have FM or AM, but has a better tuning mechanism for use on SSB.

Just have to keep it in perspective - often times, it's not the best choice if you're looking for something that's common as dirt that you can find other places, but you'll find things listed that just don't come up all that often anywhere else. Those are the ones I wait around for and snipe :-D

I snipe like a mofo. Try finding any of the Cubic gear I collect anywhere else but eBay. Dayton has paid off twice in this regard but the vast majority of my Astro equipment has come from the 'bay.

Last weekend I won an Omni VI/Opt3 and 961 PS combo for $300 less than the transceiver alone is going for on the open market. Did I get a pig in a poke? Perhaps...perhaps not. Looks clean and if there's anything wrong with the rig, either I or Ten-Tec can fix it - assuming the parts required aren't unobtanium.

A few years ago I bid for and won a junker Drake R7 receiver - $500. Upon opening it up, one found an NB7A (worth $250) and a full complement of filters (worth $80-100 ea). Depending on what I sell or keep, I just got a free radio - or free accessories.

I've had some good luck on eBay too. If bidding ends in the early AM hours it tends to work a little better.

My best eBay score is an unbuilt Ten Tec transverter kit, for the same price as they used to sell for. Close second, a Ten Tec Omni D (B) that was a bit beat, but works great. $212 w/ shipping + insurance.

My worst was an Icom IC-251 2 meter all mode that was advertised as working, no output. Fixed it.

My very best deals have all been local Craigslist scores, and here on the forum.
