So much has changed about this so I figured I would start over.

Hello I am N2RJ. Licensed in the late 90s at the encouragement of a teacher.

I enjoy DXing and contesting, home brew, digital and DMR.

What say you?

Anyway, my personal belief is that we need to encourage young people in the hobby, especially those that are interested in science and tech.

I had a lot of fun building projects, SWLing and helping out with operating events when I was a high schooler. Unfortunately for me, getting licensed was a lesser priority due to the cost, so I used the club station with a licensed control op.

Hope you all enjoy the Island and the hobby!

Ryan, I agree 100%. I wish I hadn't gotten side tracked years ago, I wanted to get my ticket then but wasn't aware of any hams in my area, and there was no interweb to look up clubs/exam sites etc.

The great thing about amateur radio is the vast diversity of activities one can choose to partake in. Digital modes, Sat work, CW and the list goes on. I wish my stroke didn't effect me as it did as I used to love building kits, unfortunately my motor control skills aren't what they were or I'd be building a K-2.

Anyway, welcome aboard Duncan, and welcome to the hobby.

WOOPEEEEE!

I got a nice little surprise when I saw this forum.

Anyways.... I'm Cal, K0DXC; I am 13 years old. I've been a ham for about 3 years since I was 10.

I am only a general  but I hope to have my extra by the end of June (before they get a new test, I just spent money on a book)

In hamming I most enjoy CW, it is a fine mode. The only thing I enjoy more than that is running a CW contest. I have submitted articles to QST and the FISTS magazine, "the keynote"

The FISTS article will be published but the QST one I just sent off after I got an email from Sean, KX9X, that said he would like to see the article that I wrote for him about my favorite subject of contesting. I was also published in the July/August issue of the National Contest Journal.

I am a moderator on "gokarters" ( gokarters.com/vbforum/ ) and I also moderate this forum here on Hamisland.

that's about it. for more info you can read my qrz.com biography or visit http://www.k0dxc.9f.com

73, thanks to Mike for the new board!

Nice hearing the backgrounds.

I used to be a little kid. I was born and raised in Lawrence, KS. Yup. About 35 miles from KU0DM. I got WN0RXE in 1976. I was Rated X Entertainment. As a farmhand on my parents farm, I was always putting up hay. But I ended going to college at Pittsburg State University.

Guess where I'll be at next Tuesday Night? Ooooh Lay Tha. (That's how you pronounce Olathe). Yup. A visit to Garmin GPS.

Know of any good repeaters around there?

Complicated question. Yes, we supply crystals to the guys here in Kansas, but a lot of the manufacturing is in Taiwan, and those buyers like the cheap Taiwanese and Chinese crystals.

I see these crystals from competitors and i know how the different crystals perform. I know that ours (comparing apples to apples meaning same frequency and case size) have a lower crystal resistance than other brands that I look at including the other Japanese manufacturers.

But we have crystals in engine controllers, transmission controllers, tire pressure monitors, dashboard displays, backup cameras, and many other automotive type applications. Maybe someday even in the cupholders.

03-25-2008, 03:39 PM
I will look for you there on the repeaters, Duncan.

I used to work at 75th and I-35 for about 7 years until 1999. It was a little sliver of land there belonging to Overland Park North and West of I-35.

While I was there, I developed a design for a double oven crystal oscillator that would remain on frequency from -30C to + 75C to within 0.0002 ppm. I got fired shortly after that development and the company went out of business a few years later.

Wow. That was a fun place.

Well so much for that, I agree with you that cost often wins over quality. No wonder so much consumer electronics these days resembles the cheap knock offs you buy in chinatown.

Yes, I still have a shot.

One of the high schools in Ohio that I might be going to has a Science teacher that is a ham. I think they may even have a small radio club.

However..... I don't know if I'll be going to that high school.

My high-school electronics teacher and Elmer was Stan, WB8WDQ. He scrounged hamfests for broken gear for the club station. Stipulation was that if we wanted to use the equipment, we would have to diagnose and repair it.

I started in ham radio at age 13 in 1953. Unfortunately, I found girls and cars more interesting and cheaper so I didn't get my first license until 1966. It has been fun since then too.

Hello from a brand new member! WD4ICJ here...handle is Ron...recently retired from commercial radio broadcasting, so have time now to get back on HF ham radio. Been a long time! Hope to be active soon on 80, 40 and 20 AM with an old Knight Kit T150-A.

Another interest tho --- Has anyone tried Part 15 operation on 13.560mhz? Pt 15 allows considerably more field strength there than on the CB band, for example, especially since it's measured at 30 meters instead of 10. I hope to try it soon for some REAL QRP!

Also in the market for a Globe Scout 65-A. Had one as a kid ---- thought I had bought another one several weeks ago, but it looks liked I was scammed. Anybody have one? '73s! Ron WD4ICJ, Palm Coast, FL

Again, welcome to the island!

Used to be? Honey, once a broadcast engineer, always a BCE. It's an "in the blood" thingy. We are a dying breed. I wonder how many of them today can run radial readings on an AM or do a proof. It's been so long for me, I don't even know if that has to be done anymore with all the dereg and what not. I would think you would to ensure compliance with rules, regs, and station license parameters.

I haven't figured out why there was a need to correct a Welshman over his native vernacular. A smoker over there, can blow through a pack of fags in a day or two. That's what they're called over there by most everyone. My Facebook friends in England and the surrounding areas, all call cigarettes, fags.
Let's not give our new friends across the pond a hard time over using their common terms.

Nope. I'm primarily a contester... but I am open to try anything new. So who knows what kind of treasure I may bring home from the next hamfest! *wink*

Actually I do have a lot of vintage gear but on the RX side of things - nearly every model of Zenith trans-oceanic (almost all of them fully operational, re-capped, selenium rectifier replaced), and even a radiola 18 which seemed to be designed for Edison DC power.

I have done a bit of AM here and K4KYV gives me good signal reports.

Have 2 cats (Phoebe and Penelope) Phoebe bites and scratches. Mean cat. Penelope is a Model Cat.
Have 2 Town Cars (1 daily driver, one full of Black Widow Spiders sitting in the yard)
Has thousands of Vintage Radios and continuously restores them.
Lives in SoCal, where we have PERFECT Weather Yearound( bit of rain today though...)
Conservative, listens to RUSH all the time (that oughta be a sour note with some on here!)
Goes to Church every Sunday, but watches the cute girls while there. (that MUST be a SIN!)
Eats Top Ramen and McDonalds unless in Dayton where it is White Castles, Forgets what Prime Rib tastes like.
(Money NOT spent on food leaves more money for more radios!)
Hates working, but spends 90% of my life here.
Ardent DXer, Contester and Honor Roll member.
My Station is a Yaesu FT-107M line driving a Drake L7 KW. Also an Icom IC-736 for Digital/RTTY, Beam is a KT-34 (missing one element. Fell off, can't figure out how to get it back on without a Bucket Truck.)
Want a Yaesu FT-5000 but can't figure out how to come up with the 6 THOUSAND bucks for one.

Kinda funny you mention ARES... I WAS an ares member for a little bit there, but got tired of the whacker mentality, political BS, and the big competition of who had access to the EOC in the Sheriffs department and quit.. The group disbanded shortly after (Not because I left hahaha). And myself and a couple of other hams formed a skywarn group and it's been smooth sailing since.. All the politics and drama are GONE!
Also thanks for the reminder to remove any mentioning of ares from my qrz bio (I know you didn't say anything about the bio, but I remembered to check to see that I got all of it removed)..

We run this skywarn group as a GROUP, not a totalitarian dictatorship.. And it really works great..
I'm glad I learned the ARES lesson early on...

Silly Queen Regina is a new one too lol

You've got a tough one to get any good comebacks on :)

Huh, an intro thread... cool... didn't see that this was around.

"The name here" is Kevin. I've been at this game relatively shortly... since 2008. Not much to say. I am president of the local ham club, in my second year, but will probably be giving it up when my term is up in the spring. I currently hold a general class license, but I plan on getting my extra this winter (I have been saying that for a while now though).

I dropped out of college in 2006ish to work full-time (and then some) on the campaign trail as a contract photojournalist (http://kds.me/photo) for the news wires and magazines/newspapers. It was fun and the money was good during the election, but after the election season ended and the recession was in full-swing in the midwest, there wasn't much work to be had, and the Register had laid off a bunch of its staff photographers, so it was getting rough. In 2010, I started working for one of the major Fortune 100 property/casualty insurance companies, where I now work in administration for the claims contact centers (we have 4 centers around the nation, about 450 employees in the department total). I am sure I will probably move to a different position within the company later on down the road. It was really a drastic change for me, working for myself out in the field seeing cool things, to being a 7:30-4 cubicle dweller 5 days a week, but I'm happy with the company that I work for so it evens out for me.

After I covered the aftermath of the 2008 Parkersburg EF-5 tornado (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkersburg,_Iowa#2008_tornado) (first reports of damage came via ham radio) and the 2008 midwest floods, among other disasters, I thought it would be a good idea to get my license. I already had a scanner in the car and at home -- I've been into scanners since a little kid, since my dad had been on the fire department for 35 years (retired as assistant chief when I was in high school). I remember spending a big chunk of my change buying scanner crystals and other gizmos at Rat Shack. Oh, the decisions I had to face with what to put in an 8-channel Bearcat!

Even though natural disasters somewhat prompted me to get my ticket, I'm not big into ARES/emcomm. I've taken some heat about it from the community for various aspects, but I'd rather give back to the community and further amateur radio by promoting educational programs and public events to increase our hobby's exposure. There's just so much to do in ham radio other than doing emcomm, imho. I don't think anyone should focus on just one aspect of the hobby.

I have a blog (http://kds.me/radio) and twitter (http://kds.me/radiotwitter) where I post about anything that interests me.

I don't remember how I found the site, I think I was probably reading something about the Island being the anti-Phred. I'm glad I found it, because a good lot of you guys are pretty messed-up. I lurk primarily because it's hard for me to keep up with all of the topics here since it is so active.

I had a teacher in high school that was a ham...I found that out about 20 years after HS.

Crazy. My high school debate teacher/coach that I hadn't seen since my freshman year showed up at the local hamfest this year. I could barely recognize him. I had no idea he was a ham, not only that, but he was an extra. I really wish he'd come to one of our meetings.

Hello all,

Despite my screen name, I live in Cleveland, Ohio, the aptly named "Mistake on the Lake." Looking forward to moving back to semi-rural upstate NY as soon as someone there will hire me. I'm an Extra Class ham and also hold a Canadian Advanced amateur license. My 12-year-old son just earned his Tech license and we're very proud of him.

I have an interest in getting CQ's WAZ (worked all zones) award, but, after almost 25 years in the hobby, I still need zones 23 and 26. I am the perfect definition of an underachieving ham. Hope I fit in here OK.

If you're not already bored nearly to death: I hold 3 FCC commercial licenses (Radiotelephone with Radar Endorsement, GMDSS Op and Maint., and Second Class Radiotelegraph). I'm also the author of a best-selling book on the history of the Second Amendment.

I will probably hide behind the "Dr. Detroit" moniker for awhile until I am sure that most people here are as crazy as I am. Eventually I'll share a link to my web page where a more complete recitation of lies is available (actually everything I wrote here is true ... for a change).

Welcome to the Island Doc. The first drink is on Pope Carlo I. The bartender will be by to take your order shortly. You'll probably find you're the only sane one here. The rest of us Islanders are Batshit crazy.

BTW The Mahi fishing is great. Especially down by the bar on the beach. Watch out for the crabs.

Welcome to the Island Dr.Detroit ...... did you get a Canadian callsign when you achieved that advanced qualification? ..... a nice feather in the cap! :agree:

Yes, and Industry Canada was kind enough to let me keep it after returning to the U.S., since I continue to have a station address in Toronto that suits their requirements.

I'll never forget the day I called the Canadian amateur radio office (at the time I believe they were still called Communications Canada, before it was consolidated to Industry Canada) to see if I could get a callsign containing my initials. I was fully prepared to pay a fee, fill out paperwork, and wait it out, as we've become accustomed to doing with the FCC. The representative's response was, "No problem, that call is available, and I just put it through for you. You can use it from now on. Have a nice day." That's the kind of government agency I can dig.

Welcome! What part of Upstate are you considering?

Please don't wait for the villagers to pretend that they are sane. The first thing a severely mentally ill person will tell you is that they are fine--its everyone else. Also, beware the guy that has put 3 of his eyes out. He only has 3 left now, and is getting a bit bitchy about it.

Stay away from the Island Girls--regardless of how they look in those flimsy grass skirts. You may get more than you bargained for...

P.S. Don't piss off the bartender. It is rumored that he will take a leak in the drinks if goaded. He is also the head resident cigar aficionado...

Any signal report other than a 5x9 will be automatically disqualified. Contact station information accuracy is not required. I will also add that my dad, who will be 67 in three days, always wanted his license and never took it because he couldn't get the Morse Code down. He used to use CBs in the 70s, hopping them up with power, etc. He also used to repair TVs in the 70s, so he is very familiar with electronis. (He also worked for IBM, ITT, Fairchild and Teredyne.) His friend was a serious Ham and he always wanted to do it. I told him I was taking the exam and that he didn't need to know Morse. He started studying and in two weeks was ready to take the test with me. My mother, who is 66, used to do drafting for an engineering firm when she was young. She saw us studying and said she wanted to take it.

Dad and I got our General and Mom only tested for Tech, but she passed, only missing two questions. Her goal is to have extra within a year. Dad is studying extra now. I don't have time now, but I will later. Anyway, we all tested together and got our tickets together, so that was pretty cool.
