The ATU on that thing uses the same forward and reflected power meters as my ST-3B.
Correct. I have a rare ST-3C ("Commercial") tuner, two of the ST-2Bs and three -3Bs...meter reuse throughout.

Note the "Swan" logo meter in the amplifier. Must have had a bunch left over from the 1500X.

I like the dual-meter set up a lot better than a forward/reflected switch or one of those god-awful cross-needle things that MFJ uses.

That is neat. With all that what the hell are you talking about repackaging some heathkit for? If you are all that board get a signal one cx-7. I wonder if that tuner was an scg, no meters on/off and some leds main led came on when it was tuned. I saw the pics of your op position neat stuff, I see you like Drake7 series. that was my first serious set up- TR7/R7 etc.

Is the st 5 just a tuner able to handle more watts than the st 3?

1) Because I can, and because the outcome justifies the effort. ;)
2) A friend of mine (ex Drake engineer) used to make lots of money repeatedly servicing the early Signal One stuff. Pass;
3) The tuner I have is definitely not an SGC unit. Two completely different design approaches.

The ST-5 uses a toroid inductor and edgewise meters, as opposed to the ST-3's PI-Dux coil and standard sweep meters. The aim was to shrink it to a size small enough to fit into its suitcase. Power handling...it's capable of coupling the output of an Astro D to loads of different impedances though you aren't going to run a kilowatt through one. Core saturation of the inductor is the limiting factor where applied power is concerned.

KC4TIR
02-04-2015, 07:04 AM
I meant the tuner in my old AstroD. I will say the signal ones are the only radios I have that can be working fine until you turn it off, then you wonder if it will work when you turn it back on.

There is an ST 3B on ebay, meters sure look better than ST 5. Eham rates it high also, so they must be pretty good.

Haven't checked over there - I may go add a comment.

My ONLY gripe with the ST-3 series is that the shaft couplers and fiberglass shafts used to connect the tuning knobs to the variable capacitors will occasionally loosen up and result in a bit of play, which prevents "precise" tuning adjustments. The fix is easy, though - open 'er up and gently tighten the hardware.

The ST-2B and -2R are different animals altogether, and don't have an antenna selector/tuner bypass switch. Which is one thing IMNSHO they truly need.

That sounds like my computer until I followed an Islander's suggestion of reseating the RAM and it wouldn't boot at all. The finger points at me, I put a stick in backward. Go ahead and laugh but don't ask how I managed that, I haven't a clue. Anyway, one mobo and a few upgrades later all fixed and I'm expecting the beast to return to my cave on Saturday. Meanwhile I have a pacifier... cool it kid, you'll get it back soon.

Hello. I have a lot of reading to do before I will be posting much but hope to hve some fun and contribute according to abilities. Electronics has always been good to me. It's a healthy and wholesome activity for today's nuclear family. The station here is always evolving and I try to keep things appropriate, for example when AM is used, as much of that path is through tubes as possible, and the reverse is true for digital experiments which are at the other end of the scale. In between, technology is mixed and even equipment is sometimes fused together to do interesting stuff. I'm as happy working with with large class B modulators as with new semiconductors and SMT layouts. So I hope I can add to the fun here and learn some new stuff.

Hi Tom! Did ya find who you were looking for? :-D

Well, I was doing a Google search of that "special someone," and found this great site. That special someone apparently was even banned here, which is interesting. From what I have read, it takes a lot to get banned here (not that I'm going to try!).

Unlike over yonder, at least here you get a stern warning before the ban hammer falls. At least from my perspective that's how it works. You have to act pretty egregious to get slammed here and that's a big part of the draw of this place. That, and we have a bartender.

Careful Charles, you're getting free and easy with our Tiki god, one day he'll bite you. Bad enough you fill his head with ice giving him a splitting headache, now you put a green thing that looks like something I scraped off my windscreen in it. It's too big to be a grasshopper, it looks like a splattered preying mantis. He looks like he's in worse pain than ever, that bug has a fierce bite!

That having been said...
Welcome to Ham Island, Tom. Once upon a time it was The Island Of Misfits With Toys because of our toys that emit radio waves, now its The Island Of Misfit Hams because our toys aren't the only misfits here. Due to a more or less recent quake in the space-time continuum, ripples in the River Thames formed the New Cut and Ham Island https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ham_Island Not wishing everyone coming and going to get soaked swimming we built The Ham Island Bridge. There are weirs at the north and south ends of the cut, so we can say we're weird and be believed. That's an introduction to the island, you'll get to know us better As Time Goes By. Play it again Sam. Lest I forget, you'll soon find out why they call me the grumpy old bastid.

There have been a few bannings...usually for very egregious and continual personal attacks against fellow members, the site owner(s), what have you. By and large the place self-polices: We're not afraid to call each other out on something. Of course, that sword cuts both ways at times.

Welcome, Tom. If you're into contesting you may have bumped into Jim, '3N on the air a time or two.

Not quite.

On the day I was born, the nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder at the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up, said "Leave this one alone."
She could tell right away that I was bad to the bone.

That's celery? Like I said that looks like a splat preying mantis. I don't like celery, but I like a live preying mantis, they fight back when I eat them. Well, not all of them, take note of this:
I walked forty-seven miles of barbed wire
I got a cobra snake for a necktie
Etc. etc. etc.
Once in a while I must feed the cobra, and for a special treat, a nice juicy rat... THIS rat.

I think I better cool it before I scare poor Tom away. Don't worry Tom, I don't bite and neither does my Cobra, it's a CB set, or it was until I sold all the CB crap and took One Step Beyond. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoa_Presents:_One_Step_Beyond

KJ3N ? Call sounds familiar, but I don't know him personally.

I know that contesting isn't for everyone. Some people like to chat with others on the air, and that's great.

As a colleague in work commented to me a few weeks ago, "So you don't operate casually?" "Nope. I have a logging/DX program running continuously, and I'm connected to the spotting cluster. If something is spotted that I need, on a band or mode, and I'm in the shack, then I will try and work it. Otherwise, I'm doing something else."

Different strokes for different folks. Nothing wrong with either.

Sorry 'bout the late entry, but there is something to say about DX spotting cluster f___s. During the last decent sunspot maximum I spent many days at an Extra Class DC to light QRP to QRO station. I was his DX magnet, not by monitoring clusters, but only noting that once a spot is posted the dog pile is well underway. Not wishing to fight it out with the blind callers stepping all over each other and kilohertz kops clobbering the DX station I casually tuned the band listening for CQs. When I heard one I listened for a moment, then if it went unanswered I'd answer the second call and I scored a hit every time. Since I went for rare DX and looking for new countries (and they piled in daily) I checked the log to see if the country I heard was already there, if it was I kept on tuning until I heard a new one. It was one helluva cycle, I filled a page every day with a 120W PEP peanut whistle.

I should mention that one time I heard a really really rare one working split with a dog pile, so I switched from the Drake to the Collins station and fired up the KWS-1. Since I had to compete with a dog pile I used the "tailing" trick, find and tune the transmit VFO to the station working him and as he clears step on his tail with a full gallon of sheer power. That proved then and there there's no way in hell to bust the Kalifornia Kilowatt Kurtain any more than sanity can bust the Ku Klux Klan, switch off Collins wasted 230V power, back to the Drake TR-7.

"Different strokes for different folks."

Oh, long list.

I bought a Scout here in VK, from ebay "it was working fine the last time I used it" that took me a good couple of months to fix, from finals to a bent PTO shaft, from broken speaker to jammed s-meter... even the lamp was blown!. It is fixed now, and I added an RF-gain control (instead of mic gain) and I'm trying to figure out how to add control over the AGC time constant without having to drill holes.

I also have two Corsair II radios, I'm installing a panadapter. I'm struggling with the nearby AM broadcast stations as they get into the IF chain and there is no way to make them disappear form the waterfall. No good. They are great radios to play with, quiet receivers and plenty of space inside. Easy to fix.

Argonaut VI: this one had some digital noise you could hear on your headphones during quiet band conditions or when the RF gain was set a bit on the low side. Looking at the schematics, I found that there are two audio outputs out of the DSP board, one for the audio amplifier/speaker/headphones and another one for the DIN connector on the back. The audio at the DIN connector was absolutely free from digital artifacts, so I discarded the noisy DSP output and hooked the audio amplifier to the quiet one. Nicest radio ever. I started using it together with a 2m transverter for SSB, a Ten-Tec 1210 IIRC.

Argonaut V: this one needs new finals, they should arrive this week. In the meantime. I have been playing with an arduino that reads on which frequency the radio is in order to select an external low pass filter. I have been given an old CB amplifier (2 x 2SC2879, good bias circuit and an attenuator pad at the input) but I need to add switchable filters.

Hercules II: I just "segregated" the DC cable into three (two high current inputs for each RF pallet plus a low current input for control) so I can use two independent 40A power supplies. I haven't tried that yet, but it should work.

The list goes on, but those are the things that keep me busy at the moment. I love the brand.

I have 2x of those, plus 2x external VFOs. Around here some place is a thread I started which gets into some modifications. I have DDS PTO replacements to evaluate and was looking at fitting Omni V/VI/Paragon IF Units, taking advantage of some additional filtering. May get around to it...may sell them before and tinker with something else.

Some time I need to look into plumbing the shack for 220v so I can run my Herc-IIs. I currently have three - two operational; one in need of repair - along with two 9420 supplies. An idea for the future is to run my two Paragon IIs, the Herc-IIs and matching 253 tuners from a solar/wind/battery storage setup. Also have an Omni V, Omni VI and one more 253 (in need of repair) that I could set up as a 3rd station.

One of my "Mods and Repairs" threads showcased the Omni VI with a blue (instead of the stock green) display. I'd love to find 7-segment cyan LEDs to make it match the appearance of the Omni V, but may end up going with white plus some blue filter material instead.

I want to do the operational amplifier mod described here:

http://corsair.wikidot.com/corsair-opamp

I also want to bypass the second IF board. I like running the PBT into the low side of the spectrum (say, from 100 Hz to 2300 Hz) but I understand that it can be achieved playing with the BFO/PTO without noise added by the second IF. I have to look into that.

The DDS PTO is an attractive idea, provided that it does not have an impact due to its higher phase noise and spurious. I rather go for a "PTO stabilizer"

I let the smoke out of the Hercules II yesterday. One of the CMOS chips located in the control board made a short and got so hot that it melted the socket where it was mounted. Will try to have it ready by the weekend... which is becoming increasily difficult as my job keeps on distracting me from my hobbies...

Hola Carlos,

I can understand you're getting sleepy on half a pint, Aussie and European beer is good stuff mate, Yankee brew is panther piss. It's the legal standards that make it half of what it should be. Now if you want rocket fuel, we cook up 180 proof Kickapoo Joy Juice out in the woods by the light of the moon, moonshine in a jar. Then they put it in a hopped up car, and drive fast down Thunder Road to a buyer. Those races with the cops fast running behind them evolved into NASCAR for those who like to sit at Indianapolis Speedway spending the day watching them drive in a circle for 500 miles, that's 804.672km for the rest of the world that went French. Those like Jim Beam and Jack Daniels went legal, char the inside of barrels, fill them with shine and wait 4 years. After the angels take their cut it comes out bourbon, they water it down and bottle it. I've heard that somehow they squeeze the barrels to get the devil's due, don't know more about it.

In the Li'l Abner strip, Kickapoo Joy Juice was an alcoholic beverage distilled in a cave with an undisclosed location (for revenue reasons) near the Dogpatch area by characters Lonesome Polecat & Hairless Joe. Thunder Road is a black and white 1958 drama-crime film directed by Arthur Ripley and starring Robert Mitchum.
