Pre-arranged deal with a friend, picked it up at Deerfield. The guy does super restoration work -- works better than new. Great rx.

So now I have two....this one, and one for parts, or to restore for (maybe) profit.

Is that the last of them?

(Sorry, but if I hadn't said it, someone else would have.)

Nice rig, Paul. I see the assorted Apaches and Mohawks at Dayton from time to time...am somewhat intrigued by the SB-104A line. What I would really love to do is to lay my mitts on a pair of HW104s and a couple HR-1680s. Then convert one of each to 160/30/17/12/11M(rx only), add notch filters and variable BFOs to the receiver sections of all and figure a way to slave the transceivers to the receivers on demand.

This year, you couldn't swing a cat in the flea market without hitting at least one...and the Collins and Drakes? I have never seen so much 7-line equipment available in one place at one time ever. Ditto the S-lines. I could have easily dropped $100k on select Cedar Rapids pieces alone. There was even a KWM-1 in attendance.

No really, I think the pic is avatar material...

Or even better, a QRZ page photo!
Seriously, Paul, I swear I walked past you half a dozen times at Deerfield looking for a guy with shorter, darker, hair!
DON'T CUT YOUR HAIR until I have had a chance to pay up, okay?

:) :) :)

Very Cool. NEVER plan on cutting it, regardless of what Carl seems to want me to do. Next chance is probably Narlfest. You going?

An interesting possibility, if I can get the Bondo and chicken wire on the Subu in time.

If not, Boxboro in August?

That's a very good possibility. Never been there...well, maybe once in '80...and it'd be good to get up there. Will pencil it in.

IMHO, personal pix suck as avatars.Any chance for Breezeshooter's? Or are you not coming to Pittsburgh until Field Day weekend?

... for those who don't know, the Pirates are playing a home series (vs the Tigers) on FD weekend. The Saturday game is a late afternoon one (4 PM), so we're going to head to the N3SH Field Day site after the game, circa 8 PM. If any other Islanders are interested, for either or both, let me know.

(And no worries about joining up with the WASH club for FD, they're OK with it. I may just have to make sure the grills remain hot for late evening burgers & dogs & etc.!)

Yes, I'll wait til FD weekend. Been galavanting all around the NE all year & it's taking a toll. I've had two weekends off and bouncing back, but will be pacing myself in the future. Not to mention being under a stack of about 5 projects that keep staring at me!

I'm very much looking forward to the weekend in June. Should be a good one!

Don't know if you missed it, but I've got a good ticket for the Fri. night game. Can already taste the hot dogs and [near] beer1

I tried for YEARS to score a Mohican on Ebay, to no avail. They always went for $100 or more, for some reason.
My first encounter with the Mohican came with a friend named Bill Carter, back in the 70s. He was completely WHACKED OUT and lived in a house full of Purebreed cats that DIDN'T use the litterbox. Man, You never smelt a closed up house full of cat shit that smelled worst! It was just AGONIZING to go and visit him. His mother lived with him, but he had a million dollars inheritance which he squandered at will. The cats shit all over all the stuff he bought. Just TERRIBLE living conditions!

So Bill Carter bought a Heathkit Mohican and tried to put it together. It didn't work! So he went POSTAL and started HAMMERING AND SMASHING IT into Oblvion. Yes, with a Sledgehammer, he pummeled every last bit of it. I recovered some of the pieces of the smashed PCB, but nothing was usable. Everything was completely damaged. Every part on the board!!!

I would lust for a Mohican for decades afterward, but never come across one until one day, at the El Cajon ELKS lodge. I went into the radio room and one was sitting on the table. I asked WHO owned it, and no one had any idea other than it had been "DONATED" to the Lodge by some member. One of the lodge officers didn't like it's looks (too old fashioned) and told me to TAKE IT HOME!!!! INDEED I DID and now it is in the East Wing of the Crest Radio Museum! Don't recall if it works or not. Those Germanium transistors are most assuredly UNOBTANIUM. And it had a funny power supply module that was missing or you had to plug it full of D cells. So I vaguely remember hooking it up to a power supply, confirmed it worked and stashed it on the shelf. It is not possible to put something on top of it because of the carry handle and antenna, so it is under the wifes TV set. She already complained that the BABY is messing with it.

Common equivalents for the 1N34A are the ECG109 (Sylvania) and SK3090 (RCA) (typically used by electronics repair types).
Some people have also reported that 1N60 will work in this application, too.

Also, you can order the original here: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic2/index1/In34a.html
1N60 here: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic2/index1/1N60.html

I also found this PDF with replacements cross referenced: http://pdfdownloadfree.net/?pdfurl=1qeXpurpn6Wih-SUpOGumKynh7DY5cnZiKji4dzhobja08re1OTI2Yis5dvN05ah 6KeWppHch6_bn6Sko5Dc2undn5ue29HZ09ni4dec6d2j1dqb0t fZ1dTU16HM4OPZ6N_K0p3mydqKoO0
They are out there. I found some at a hamfest once. There is a couple that travel or used to travel the hamfest circuit. Trays and trays of loose parts at low low prices. You may recognize them because the wife always complained, in front of everyone, to her husband that they should pack up and leave now because they weren't making any money.

I have a fairly extensive inventory of germanium diodes and transistors. Need a part? Shoot me a number and I'll see if I have it. If I haven't needed a given semiconductor in years and have one or two floating around, it's yours for the cost of shipping.

Thanks for that. But don't have a need right now. The "good" one I got has been very expertly restored and is working "better than new." (The guy fixes the play and physical alignment "features" of the KNOBS on the radio!) And, I've got the other one that works for parts, should that need arise. If it doesn't, well, I can listen to Mohicans in Stereo! Well, kinda....

Thanks again!

Great story, Pat, thanks. And I see that Bill Carter hadn't learned that it's futile to do battle with an inanimate object. THAT tantrum cost him a few bucks!

As always, good to see you on the Island! Pity there's a whole continent between us...would love to hook up at a hamfest. Well, I DO expect to make a trip to SoCal sometime reasonably soon; I can plan it around the TRW fester.

Let me know when you make the trip, Paul. We can meet up at TRW. It's about 120 miles from here but I'd be up for it.

That'd be awesome...and good reason to figure out when and how I'll make the trip. I'd love to spend about a month out there, any shorter would be way too short.

Well I AM planning a road trip to Michigan and Minnesota this summer, probably in July sometime. Seems like a detour to Illinois would be in order.

If you're in So. Illinois, yea, I guess. But after looping north through Michigan and then Minnesota, I'll probably drive back via Chicago to avoid doubling back through Michigan. Another possibility is a ferry across Lake Michigan, if there's still one running.

Don't go through Canada anymore. They don't really like finding 811's when the xray everything in the car.
