A friend asked me to fix his computer, thinking that there was malware on his computer. I booted the computer in my home office and saw immediately the problem - Norton 360
While the laptop was still responsive, I checked the processes, and downloaded antimalware bytes, which took three hours for a quick scan, no presence of malware or viruses.
I uninstalled Norton, and the computer was alive again.
Loaded with Free AVG 2012, and still responsive. AVG has a sensitivity control.
As a precaution, I put the newly installed Firefox 12 in a sandboxie, and returned computer.
If you have a computer that is very slow to non-responsive and have Norton 360, get rid of Norton before you do something drastic.
