View Full Version : My Latest Project
I'm a WWII Military Radio kinda guy. Here's my latest project-
a WWII Royal Australian Air Force Wireless 58 Set,
AT5 Transmitter, AR8 Receiver (homebrew junction box)
now resurrected and making AM contacts on 75 mtrs:

What mil or BA rigs are you resurrecting?

Way cool! Wish I had the chops to do that sort of thing. What kind of power supply did you have to come up with?

Damn thing gave me a woody!

What kind of power supply did you have to come up with?
The transmitter (30 watts AM, 55 watts CW out) needs 550 and 300 volts B+, plus 12 V filaments.
The receiver calls for 250 volts B+ (and 12 volts filaments),
but I'm an advocate for running old, historic rigs on reduced B+ to both preserve them
and minimize parts changes. So the receiver supply is a 12-to-90 Volt DC/DC
converter and the rig works excellent at that level.
I refurbished an old Hallicrafters mobile power supply that gives me 12, 250 and 550 VDC out
and that works great for the transmitter. I've been working with WWII rigs since I was
a Novice in 1971; my first "dit" on the air was a BC-459 "ARC-5." If any of you will be
in Plano, Texas at Hamcomm this June, I'll have a display in the swap area.
Did one last year with help gratefully acknowledged from KC4TOS (Master of Metal)
and the great members of the milradio email reflectors:

Going to bring a rare AN/ARC-5 Longwave transmit variant
and a Collins AN/ARC-2 this year, along with others.
What projects have you melting solder these days?

Nifty, nice job on the displays.
I'm still working on the restoration of my Drake twins. Got the R-4A up and working fine and am (finally) getting full output on CW from the T-4X but SSB mode doesn't appear to be working correctly and I can't get them to behave when linked together in transceive mode. No biggie, I went into the project as a learning endeavor and, boy, has it ever been that. I'm still far from expert in these matters but I know a lot more about them than I did when I started.

Not nearly as impressive, but I've got a group of T/Rs for top band, 80 and 40. Have the supplies done, and working on a "control" module for B+/A+/antenna/audio switching, TX/RX audio, and metering. I'll probably make a wood rack/cabinet to put it all in.
All units now work, and Ive installed 9 pin connectors for all transmitters, and 8 pinners for receivers, some units didn't even have connectors when I got them.

This is a good thread to make the following offering:
I have a box of tubes for rigs of that era - 1625, 807 and a number of others. Also have a rather heavy box of mica and oil-filled transmitting caps.
Tubes are free to good home - just pay shipping.
Caps...$20 plus shipping gets them to your door, and is to help a fellow ham/widow of an SK clear out her basement.

Nice set up. I'd love to spin the dial on that through the AMBCB.

Very cool Dave. Has it been on the old military radio net?

Not so far. I have trouble working them down here in Texas.
Once I get 220 volts to the work bench, I think the 30L-1 might fix that ;-).
