View Full Version : Riffs and Hooks
How about posting a list some of your favorite opening licks here? You know, the songs that have something that grabs your attention immediately?
I'll start it out with the opening few bars of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Up Around the Bend and the Rolling Stones' Happy.
There are a shit-ton of others but those will get the ball rolling.

The beginning of Crazy On You, by Heart is a big favorite and a quick thought.
More than just a riff though...

Not particularly complex, but if you can't peg it in about 4 notes...

Doesn't need to be complex, it just needs to grab you. And that one does.

Those buildings got to burning, there's my baby layin'on the ground
Charlotte Jones was there, Luiza was there,
Rosie Mae was there, Louise was there
Did you ever hear about the burning,

A friend and I saw Iron Butterfly at the Denver Pop Festival.
Man, did we pick the wrong day. 3-day show and Hendrix played one of the other days -- his last show with Experience.
woke up this morn with "Boris the Spider" running thru my head...

Many years ago, I worked with a guy that didn't appear to have any coordination, or talent for that matter. One day he brought his guitar to work for a talent spot, and played that song flawlessly. It really blew me away because that's not an easy three cord song. Every time I hear it, I think of him and how no one ever guessed he possessed such talent.

I can play it flawlessly, but only in my head. My musical talent reaches to negative numbers. ;)

I'm with you there, Doug. I've tried a number of times and it just ain't there. Pisses me off, too, because I come from a musical family. I guess I didn't inherit the gene.
Another addition:
Take a Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. That's a first note identifiable song if there ever was one.

With all the bass players around here, I thought I would throw in one of my favorite bass riffs. It's the beginning of You're The One That I Want, from the movie Grease. When that comes on the radio, the volume goes to max. Of course, I always had a thing for Olivia, anyway
Agreed! Theres some great bass playing on that one...session pro played it for sure. Same with Footloose.
We can start a thread about great bass performances if you like? :chin:
Im about to head to the mountains, but ill jump on it when i get back.

Why yes, as a matter of fact I did/do. I always thought she was a hottie, and she can sing, too.
So were not talking about the digital mode, right?

He likes that Olivia because she's got big bits.

Not that she looked like she was a High School senior in the first place.
