I can't help myself. These are amazing and intelligent creatures.

Check out Architeuthis some time and see the lengths to which its main predator goes in order to catch them...and you'll gain an entirely new appreciation of cetaceans.

I have no doubts what man has done to harvest these amazing animals. The fact that it still goes on (for sport over in COR's neck of the woods) pisses me off.

As far i know we don't capture or shoot any of them for decades.
I've been on the last whaleship we had as kid the Willem Barents that was sold off then.
Since 1964 the Dutch never hunted whales again.

That is traditional whaling for food and oil (I have eaten whale when I was a child). This is what I am talking about: http://www.divephotoguide.com/underwater-photography-scuba-ocean-news/faroe_islands_whale_slaughter_photographed/

Maybe not your country, but one of your neighbours?

OK I checked out Google Maps. While the Faroe Islands are COR's neighbours, they are distant neighbours. Closer to the UK and Norway......... I always thought the Netherlands and Norway were the same thing. The Dutch live there and run around among the Tulips in wooden shoes....... Learn something new everyday!

No, but if I could afford to I would have a complete collection of Whale Wars.

Mesonycoteuthis (relative of archi) and what's been eating it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_squid

The whales in question dive to almost 8000ft in order to catch and eat the squid, finding them solely by their sonar.

That is the stuff nightmares and movies that cause nightmares are made of! By comparison, Jaws was a guppy! Don't go in the water!

Yes, but if the target you have to hit is slightly smaller than the Marianas Trench ...

Funny thing about DX.......well, maybe not funny but I don't chase it. It is not a priority of mine. If I hear a DX station calling CQ, there is no pile-up, the station speaks English well enough for me to understand him, and I think I can work in a rag chew with him, I'll call him. Otherwise, it is just another, "I worked to hard to get a 59 contact" and I am not interested. Every once in a while I'll hear something intriguing to me and I'll jump into the pile-up, like the time I was mobile and worked Sierra Leon, because he was working split and I had not worked split before.

What irritates the shit out of me is when I hear a DX Station, and there is a pile-up and you get that pushy guy, who calls over and over again, even when the DX is talking, and when he finally gets heard says, "Hello Hermie, I've worked you 7 times before!" Then he gets his 59 report. Why bother?

I'm 6 foot tall, and weigh 400 pounds. I don't know nothing about no penises 'cept my own. I can probably describe several dozen vaginae in detail if you like.

Poppies are pretty too! I prefer Roses and then Tulips. Wish my old lady would plant some. My mom had dozens of Rose Bushes and hundreds of Tulips. Allot of fruit trees too. Every year she planted 1/4 acre with vegetables. We ate very well when I was at home.

Fair enough on the first part, I simply have no interest in repeaters and own no 2m gear at all. I may give sats a try in the future, but i love DXing. Thats the great thing about this hobby, something for everyone.

On the second part....couldnt agree more. Calling over and over without listening just tells a few hundred other ops at the same time that you suck at this pileup biz and should stick to internet porn. I hear it all the time, DX says "The Italy Kilo Six Alpha station again, Only the Italy Kilo Six, please"....10 stations without an Italy, a Kilo or a Six keep calling, even though he is talking. I mean, clearly talking, THEN they start calling over him...its like they are chasing an entirely different station! Unreal.

But thats another thread....

You have just described, in full detail, the standard operating procedure of our exiled undertaker.
It was so bad at times he was making ME embarrassed for him. It got to where if I could hear him in the pile up, I'd just go looking somewhere else...but occasionally I'd slip my call in a couple times, make the contact, and spin the VFO giggling to myself.
Hope it's better now, but I seriously doubt it.

Oh man, i didnt even know the guy got on HF. Yeah, he seemed like the type...obstinate, checked out, ignores protocol in favor of warped idealism...in other words, the guy is nuts, i cant imagine his pileup etiquette to be any better.

When I was a new ham I asked why my rig came with FM. The answer was so I could use repeaters on 10 and 6M.......Why? It makes no sense to me. It's an HF rig! LOL! I did try 10M repeaters once. I keyed up and Identified on 2 repeaters, one in NY and 1 in TX at the same time. That started a shit storm. I was talking to a guy in TX and the guy in NY wanted to know what was going on because he couldn't hear the ham in TX. No room for repeaters on HF. I guess there is something for everybody.
I own a Handheld that will do 2M and 70cm, I rarely use it. I would like to get a 2M for APRS use and a dual band mobile for my truck so I have something to do while travelling around going to doctors appointments. I would love to get another HF rig and run it in my truck, but that is not in the budget at this time.

I would do 6m, but for the DXing, maybe next cycle. 10m is not a repeater band for me, it works just fine as a straight up DX band for HF. But in other news, i repaired my antenna and got that back in the air yesterday and within 10 minutes, i logged Bonaire and Guatemala. Its good to be back on the air. I even got a bundle at the same time from the 7th district buro, pulled a couple of new ones out of the envelope (St Barts and Market Reef)...good times!

Yes, I have :D Spanish I have no problem with. I can speak Spanish/Mexican (or Mexican Spanish if you prefer) fairly well, but I can not read or write it. As mush as we'd like it to be, CA is not DX, but I am looking forward to the day when I can work it and it has an IOTA number!
