I bought a 3 amp power supply today,my transciever needs 7 amps. What would happen if I connected it in parallel to a battery?

The same thing mine did, charge the battery. My first power supply was one of those puny supplies and a car battery, it worked.

At three amps, I'd worry a bit about it overcharging the battery if left on for long periods of time. If you're only going to turn it on while you're using it, though, you should be okay.

Do it, but add a charging regulator between the battery and supply.

+1.

Sunlight Energy Systems (WB8VGE) used to offer a nice one.

Or build your own!

If nothing else, this one is a good read and can get some thought juices flowing.

And off topic, but I found it interesting:

It could just charge the battery, fry the battery or fry the PSU.

It depends on the size and type of battery. If it is a deeply discharged AGM battery for example it will fry the power supply for sure (or trip its overcurrent mechanism, or blow the fuse).

Good find. That will work nicely with a 120w panel which makes it perfect for field day.

Yep. I got one a while back, made powerpole pigtails for it. I will primarily use it with my 5th wheel camper and some solar panels, but it will also provide for FD as well. I still need to lay in some more panels and I'm getting interested in the 400 watt wind generator that Menards is selling. http://www.menards.com/main/outdoor/alternative-energy/wind/air-x-400-watt-wind-generator/p-1707648-c-6293.htm

Good deal. I think for this FD I'm going to use my stinkpot but for next year I'll probably go all alternative energy.

How is that unit in terms of hash/RFI?

Not nearly as bad as my Coleman generator.

Good deal but if you like paying more ... a lot more, look here. http://www.amazon.com/CES-Solar-656403812100-Power-Controller/dp/B001TI01JC/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1332725860&sr=8-2-fkmr1

Yeah I hear you... we tried to do JOTA a few years ago with a coleman. Boy oh boy that thing was hash city! Luckily one of the other hams brought his little Honda EU2000i.

Few years back some of use were doing the first SPAR winter field day and we had a horrible time with hash noise. We spent the weekend blaming it on Ft McCoy. Turned out to be a small power inverter that was being used to power a router. Now we have a router that runs direct off 12V (WRT-54G--I suspect the one we were using that day did as well, but it wasn't mine) and a small power inverter that seems to be about as rf quiet as you can get.
