Finding an original 389 would be a serious chore.

I worked with a guy who got hold of a frame-off/correctly done '65 ragtop - 400 break-in miles - $7200. It had a 396 - dual Holley 4 setup installed and the original 389 w/ Tri-Power carbs was included...fully rebuilt, and in a bag...with just a test firing on it.

This car was absofriggin'lutely gorgeous, and I never seem to come across those deals.

In 1979 I was a senior in high school, working in the oilfield evenings, and weekends.
I earned more than my teachers, and lived at home.
At one time,in my moms driveway I had 2 1970 GTO's,a'69 GTO,a '64 GTO,a 69 GTX,and a '69 Mach I Mustang.
I don't think I paid over $800.00 for any of them.

Ahhh, muscle cars! I paid $900 for a 1969 Hurst Olds 442 back in 1972. Candy-apple red with the black stripes, and a black vinyl top. Had factory AC, and an 8-track tape player. That thing was a runnin' sonofabitch! Never knew which way the back end was going when you hit 2nd gear. It sits on cinder blocks on the north side of Richmond now, a rusting hulk.

It's callin' your name, Luke. Waiting for you to restore it to it's former glory!

I made the mistake of showing it to my youngest son a few years ago. I don't think there's enough bondo on the entire eastern seaboard, plus, the original block is gone, replaced by a motor out of a station wagon.

I spoke with an old racing buddy at my cousin's funeral a few months ago. He said he had pictures of me in the car at the Richmond Dragway, and in front of the auto parts store I used to work at, doing burn-outs. He promised to scan them and email them to me, but hasn't yet. The only photo I have of the car is after I painted it white, and it's a very poor quality shot.

The pics of me at 17 & 18 years old would prove far more entertaining than the car itself. You guys would bust a gut laughing! I was the ultimate redneck/hippie back in those days, and I really loved my car, Budweiser, and Marlboro's.

I'm lucky to have survived all of it. I lost my license in that car doing a massive burnout in a 7-Eleven parking lot one night. It may have been that I nearly run over an off duty Henrico cop while doing so. The judge, who previously threatened me with his wrath after a speeding ticket (in excess of 99 mph in a 55 mph zone + reckless driving), was NOT amused! He offered me a very nice 6 month suspension of my driving privileges. Haven't had a ticket since.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never owned a car that had eight cylinders (and only two that had six).

If it makes you feel better, I've had several eights that only ran on six, and not very well, at that.

Its nice but I could never bring myself to spend that kind of money on a car, any car. Even when I buy new cars they are low end because such a car is used for commute and nothing more. As for cars that one would own for fun, I have a few but again, I buy cheap and rebuild myself. =) Just a personal preference.
