Here's the deal; I am attempting to configure a Cisco Catalys 2613 Switch.

Working towards a CCNA, reading the books and, my lab partner (who is light years ahead of me because he works as a Network Engineer) throws a switch in my lap and tells me to take it home and configure it.

Here's where I am:

1. Downloaded Vandyke CRT Terminal Software to "Lab Server".

2. Hooked the Catalys switch "console" up to my computer (Lab Server") through the serial port.

3. Hooked one side of the switch to my Gateway Router (cable internet gateway)

4. Hooked other side of switch to my Cisco workgroup switch

5. hooked Laptop to workgroup switch.

Stuck at this point, Gateway does not see switch and, Laptop cannot ping Gateway.

Switch needs to be configured but, I am not there yet; looking for a quick roadmap to set config in switch.

Ok, so are you looking for help building the config? If so, I'll need to know how you need to configure it. Or, are you looking for a quick-start tutorial?

And, you should be able to connect a rollover cable to the switch's console port. 9600-8-N-1 for the com settings. PuTTY will do serial console too.

All the links to PuTTY were broken, I D/L SecureCRT and tried everthing but it didn't work on the Vista Platform. I pulled out my XP machine and used Hyper Terminal to connect to the interface of the switch; hours versus minutes with Hyper Terminal / XP.

My mission is to Rename it and bring the switch back to "out-of-the-box-default" configuration before lunch on Tuesday.

That's 12 hours fom this exact minute.

ETA: I was snatched from Chapter 4 of ICNT (Intro) and give a switch to decode and reprogram before I got to those chapter in the book; this is realistic OJT workday instead of reading about the OSI stacks and second level headers. It's nice to have an idea of what day-to-day IT work is but, I have to pass the Certification so that I can set the priorities for those day-to-day jobs.

Gotta go back to those chapters on level 2 and level three devices..

Presuming you are using Windows XP? This should work, right click on the link below, do a "Save As".

http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty-0.62-installer.exe (http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty-0.62-installer.exe)

Just downloaded it myself (slightly newer version). My AV software auto checks all downloads, but I'd check it yourself as well.
Once you have the file, double click and run it. PuTTY is one of my "gotta have it" utilities, it rocks.

Thanks again,

Let me get your opinions on this; I am installing PuTTY to my XP laptop which doesn't have a serial port so, I went shopping for a USB to Serial adapter (Dongle) in order to use the laptop as my console. The only offering was at Microcenter for a price of $40.00 plus tax (the laptop isn't worth $50 bucks at a ham fleamarket).

Online, I looked and found these:

You DO have the roll over cable, correct? You can't back to back into the thing that looks like a serial port on the switch (It's actually a network interface).

If not, let me know, and I might have one I can send you (At no cost).

Corey,

Yes I have the blue Cisco Console Cable that has the Db9 Serial plug that is connected to my PC and the RJ-45 is inserted into "Console".

Right now, I am using a desktop PC as my console but, I was looking for the Serial-to-USB cord to use my XP Laptop in the field. The laptop does not have a serial port so, I am looking at the cost of the solution.

I have the 2004 Edition of Intro To ICND and ICND (CCNA Self Study) and the Global Knowledge Boot Camp Course (2007 Edition) with sample test questions. My project router is the Cisco 2611 that I am playing with.

I've got a CompTIA A+ Certification, had it since 2000.

My associate at the university IT Department has to pass this certification to get a promo/raise so, we are doing this together for fun and profit.

Right now, I am looking at CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) .

Ok, so what are you trying to make the switch do? Just be a switch, with nothing special?

Run this, copy/paste:

sh interface status

This should dump all of the interfaces, and I can step you through how to enable them all. It's pretty easy:

en
int e0/1
no shut
int e0/2
no shut
...
int e1/99
no shut

If all looks well...

copy running-config startup-config

And then test:

reload

KC2UGV
02-24-2012, 09:25 AM
When it says an interface has "LINE PROTOCOL DOWN" that means, there's nothing plugged into the switch port. If it shows "INTERFACE ADMINISTRATIVLEY DOWN" that means you told the switch to turn off the port:

en
int e0/1
shutdown

So, if there is something plugged in, but you turned it off, it will say:

Interface Ethernet 0/1 LINE PROTOCOL UP, ADMINISTRATIVELY DOWN

As far as the Cisco IOS Command Line Interface Functions, I had a "Eureka" moment, the light came on; I get it and, if I don't there is the "?".

User EXEC---> Privileged EXEC--->Configuration----> (config)#--->.

I understand that there are sub-menus to each selection on each EXEC mode. I am now able to find the proper syntex for the commands and, I am starting to understand the order that they need to be implimented but, there are so many commands that my Eureka Moment was like getting hit by a couple of 1000 candle-power spotlights.

I'm with you. 2 ports only makes it look more like a Router than a Switch, I've tossed the startup-config a couple of times
and I am trying different things (eventually, I will catch up with the Lab guide and make the Router/Switch work like I want it to).

There are two projects underway in my Radio room, one is a GS-35B Amplifier that is under construction and the other is my Cisco Learing Lab setup. The Cisco IOS CLI is more interesting than PSK, LSB and, QRO.

.

ETA: I can get the ports administratively up (no shutdown) and the "protocol" on (cable connected) but, I cannot get an IP address from my Router; packets have been sent and received but still no "connectivity" to outside world.

You're getting there with the IOS stuff :)

But, of course, no connectivity. You have no routing configured :)

So, what are you trying to get the router to do? Once we have that answer, we can start building your router config.

Level Three device is back on shelf and, i am working with level 2 device, had the wrong books and devices. Level Three is more interesting but, we were skipping too much Cisco Level 2 trivia :-)

Ok, so what are you trying to get the switch to do? By default, it operates as a really expensive Linksys switch.

Cory, thanks for all the input,

I am going to an informal Boot Camp on campus 3 times a week where there is a Cisco learning lab I also have the same lab set up at home and, my associate reads this message board. What looks like blah-blah-blah is the configs that I currently have setup. Right now, I am looking at this weird config of a switch and wondering where it was used in the topography.

My lab partner is a Network Engineer at the university.

Looks like it was used an a really expensive mutli-port switch. No IP address set on any interface, 1 VLAN, etc etc. Pretty vanilla setup. So, it could have been used pretty much anywhere except for the core network backbone.

If it was used in a core, it would have had multiple VLAN's (Most likely), a management IP address (Definitely), and some network policies (Such as QOS, etc).

Ohhhh, Ceeesco!

See, this is why I prefer Pancho brand network equipment over the Cisco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cisco_Kid_(TV_series)) stuff.

Everybody, at least most, know that Cisco's horse was named Diablo. What was Poncho's horse named? NO CHEATING, DAMNIT (By the way, when I was about six or so, I met Leo Carrillo at a Mexican food restaurant my grand parents use to take me to)

Funny thing happened while I was configuring my switch, I had a typo in my username so, every time I tried to login to console line 0, my "USERNAME AUTHENIFICATION" didn't work; I locked myself out of my own system.

I cussed for 15 minutes at myself until someone smarter than me suggested that I TELNET in and <erase startup-config>

Around here it's called "Learning the old German Way", make your mistakes and then fix them yourself, bet you won't do "it" again!
