View Full Version : In other news.... I'm retiring!!

Just at a perfect time. Not really my choice, I love my job so much that I would have been hard to leave volutarily -- too many cherished dreams have come true here.

But, the powers that be decided that the awesome engineering capability here is espendable and there was a bloodbath last week that included many many long term (30+ year), highly respected and very talented engineers. Probably Wes Bush (our CEO) protecting his $10 million compensation.

But, I've been ready for retirement for a couple of years and this way I'm spared the "When?" or "Did I pick the right time" thinking, so I'm happy about things. Got lots of toys to play with as I start my life of liesure. And, eventually, I hope to travel around the country doing temp. contract work. I'd LOVE that -- I adore travel.

The tough part is all the people who NEED their jobs. The outlook is postive, tho'...the reputation of Norden Systems is solid gold and it's probable that anyone being let go will be snapped up at the houses where there are openings.

That, along with the good news from Memorial Sloan Kettering has me walking on air!

You are full of good news this week. Enjoy your time, you worked for it.

And by you leaving, maybe the CEO can bump his compensation package up a notch.

Congrats old man! best of wishes and times for your new ham-handi-cart!

Y'know, at Dayton last year when my energy was down because of the nastiness growing in me, I actually looked at 'em and had serious thoughts.....but resisted!

And thanks, all, for the nice words. I had a "practice" retirement in '02 & '03. LOVED it AND learned how to live very cheaply. Very good training for the future! And got all the expensive stuff about retirment (like travel) out of my system.

Besides, I was self-indulgent over the holidays and dropped a bundle buying new toys...all of which are time-consuming hobbies. I'm READY!

Uh-huh. The worst part of the "practice" retirement was going back to work. Ugh!

Condradulations. And just because you are retiring doesn't mean you have to stop doing the kind of work you enjoy. I don't know exactly what you do but retirment might be a good time to explore a part of your profession that you otherwise would not have had the time for while working for somebody else.

And more music (playing and producing) time and more model railroading time and more train watching, and recording, and photographing time!

Well, those are my four diseases. And they all fit together synergistically!

Well, yea!!!! I'll be a poor retiree & won't be able to afford expensive cuts!!!

Aw, but the pity was that I didn't reach my goal. I was saying I'd retire when my hair reached my waist. Hmmm...shoulda told my boss that when I got notice! I doubt if our $10 million CEO would've cared, tho'.

Naw...won't need any software. Gonna be 100% "what I want to do at the time." Now..to find a one-room hovel of a shack in the Catskills with perfect trees for a 160 double extended Zepp up about 100'. or maybe even a Vee beam.

Maybe we should all take a cue from the guy in Catch-22 who only did really, really boring things to make time drag? Tried to get his name, but the Wiki article didn't mention him. Anyone remember his name? He shot skeet because he hated it and it was boring.

Retirement means a lot of different things to different people. I know of a couple of people with grad degrees who are "retired" but they are still working namely because they like what they do. I doubt I'll ever fully retire from work.

It's official. "Out-processed" (corporatespeak for "given the sack") today & I'm Free! Gonna miss that great bunch of awesome talent, but we've all got contact info & will probably see each other regularly.

And, wouldn't ya know it...this happened just as we were getting a ham club going. The company provided space & gave us their blessings to establish a station there (I'd volunteered my Drake and Icom on an "on-loan" basis) and even had the electrician wiring it up for us. Ah, well, now I can mobile anyday! Almost as good -- maybe better!

I know that feeling of freedom, enjoy!

If you had enough employees to start a ham club, might I suggest an annual Field Day gathering. If there's something for the non-hams to do as well, it might be a great way to get together at least once a year.

Doesn't work. For two years I've tried to plan my days in order to get everything done I want to do. If I plan three things for tomorrow, I guarantee I'll be lucky to finish one. The days just go too damn fast. For example, I finished the DSS VFO board three weeks ago. I found time to quickly test it, but haven't had time to make up the cables and try it out with the TS 530, and put it in an enclosure. Haven't finished the kitchen cabinets, oak bed frame, fixing a large number of radios, selling some trailers, finishing rocking the driveway, fixing the entry gate, putting new hard drives in our computers, reading a bunch of books I have been meaning to read, and on and on and on. I am amazed at the number of things I have accomplished, but nowhere near what I had hoped for. And like I said, it seems I just get started, and the day is over. However, it still beats the shit out of going to work every day. A word of advise. Don't overwhelm yourself by starting a shitload of projects at the same time. You'll end up burning the candle at both ends, and all you'll wind up with is a short wick.

One thing I've noticed and appreciated is there's no longer pressure to "get 'er done before the time off is over." Nice to know that that "time off" doesn't end - takes a lot of pressure off.

But it's been frustrating. This happened just as chemo effects started ramping up. Nothing really serious; just damnably distracting. And since that's my priority "project" (creates the time for the other projects!)...it's where my attention has been. With any luck, my next scan will show it's an appropriate time for a break form all that. Just a hope, but that'd be welcome! But that's good timing, really. No worries about sick time, etc. Don't have to expend energy worrying about THAT!

One thing about that treatment, it's not boring! Every time is different.

Hope all goes smoothly with the quack.

And by the way, today was a prime example of time getting AFU. I had a long list of shit to do today, (as usual) and spent most of the day on and off the phone with Samsung tech support. My TV downloaded a firmware update, corrupted along the way I guess, and I had a hell of a time trying to get a good file reloaded with a USB memstick. Probably wouldn't have taken near as long if I knew how to speak Hindu. What a pain in the ass.
