AP is reporting that Megaupload has been shutdown and employees are being indicted. No other facts yet but this is interesting.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload), it's based in Hong Kong.

What people need to do is to nut up and quit buying/stealing/consuming ANYTHING produced by Hollywood. Go spend the money on something tangible, or support indie artists.

I know nothing about the case; but I suspect that in end, the government won't be able to prove that Megaupload was promoting piracy. Instead, they will only convict some of the accused on tax related issues. The end-effect of killing the website will be the same. Only, it won't be quite the sensationalized anti-piracy case that the government and media are painting. Just a guess, though.

"Megaupload was led by colorful Australian Kim Dotcom..."

Uh oh, that's the registration plate on my landlord's Corvette; DOTCOM (NY).

Remember MP3.com? The RIAA never had to prove anything. They simply accused the site of wrong doing.
In case you missed this, MP3.com had exclusive deals with certain artists and the RIAA and their hitmen claimed that said artists were uploading music under assumed names that didn't belong to them. No evidence, nothing.
MP3.com could not defend themselves against the mountains of lawyers the RIAA had even though they were innocent.
Money does more than just buy and sell free speech, it kills the very hands that feed it.

But then you have The Pirates bay. No matter what is thrown at them they are still standing. The difference is? Maybe the money to fight it? Im not sure. I really dont read up on these things but I do remember them making a big deal out of it a few times.

So I guess they don't need SOPA and PIPA being they can already shut down any sites they want anywhere in the world.

PirateBay is in Australia, if I am not mistaken.

Used to be hosted somewhere in Scandinavia as I recall. Part of the reason it's hard to shut down is that they're adept at moving it to other countries.

Since when does that stop our govt?
