A new all encompassing 'weather' thread. There's no requirement that you keep weather discussion here, but if you simply want to say how wet, cold, hot, or windy it is.. this is a great place to do it. :)

-------------------

Weather girlie on the talking box just told me there could be wind gusts up to 75mph today.

:lies:

I'm skeptical. Hurricane force winds and it's treated as a bullet point? Pshaw.

Had gusts up to about 65mph last night, and it went from 54 to 23 overnight. Thankfully, the landlord and I learned his antenna mast, holding a 2 meter beam and rotator) will withstand the winds :)

Been dry here after a rainy fall. We had a small amount of rain on Monday, about .2", but it's starting to look worrisome. Typical SoCal pattern for a La Niña winter though—wet fall, dry winter. Currently 39°F (4°C, 277°K) and sunny.

Was almost 60 out this time yesterday.

Now it's 26.

The large amount of rain we had yesterday froze on the roads and an inch or so of snow on top of it made for an interesting commute.

It's definately not a nice day here today! ....15 centimeters of snow came down over night ...... -4 degrees celsius apparently the weather will do an about face in 3 days when temperatures will warm up to 8 degrees celsius and melt this stuff quickly....... seems to be following the La Nina type pattern for this area

n2ize

Well, we had our biggest snow of the winter yesterday. In a few spots on the ground we had a massive whopping 1 - 2 millimeters of snow on the ground !! And man, did it last long !! It lasted almost an entire 30 minutes before it melted. Damned... this is one brutal rough winter.

And believe it or not I heard a couple of local guys on a 2 meter machine last night discussing how rough this winter has been and how tough it is going to be on heating costs... Huh ?? What ?? Were these guys around here last winter ? Last winter we had so much snow and ice piled up by now to the point where you could only walk in the middle of the road and when a car passed you had to stop walking and stand to the side so it could pass. Last winter I was wearing a heavy shirt, sweater, winter coat, fur lined hat, and I carried a fuel powered hand-warmer in my pocket. This winter I've barely needed more than a tee short and a windbreaker. The hand-warmer sits un-fueled, unused, in the drawer.

Think Pink, or at least I do.

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Frozen in a fish bowl,
But that was last year,
Salting over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same driving fears.
Wish you were here.

Flash forward to so far this year, after a serious well below freezing cold spell it's warming up again... sort of. Back into the 40s but windy and damp as usual in winter at the shore it still cuts like a knife so as always I hibernate until spring. Hey I'm a grumpy old bastid, not a crazy as a loon Polar Bear!

Well, I am not into the idea of going into the water during cold weather but I do love the look and feel of the grey skies, the snow, cold rain and the ocean spray along the waterfront during a winter Noreaster.

Do you remember the famous/infamous December 1992 Nor'easter ? I remember it well. I got home from the city around 1:00am Friday morning, just as the storm was introducing itself into the neighborhood. It made it's debut by blowing our wooden picnic table across the yard. Next morning it was hurricane sustained winds, cold rain, and incredible wind gusts. Subways and roads were flooded out completely in parts of the city and sections of Westchester, Long Island, and jersey near the coast didn't fare very well at all. Some places had snow and blizzard like conditions. We got mostly rain. The storm lasted from Dec 11-14., As it continued the rain got colder and colder and slowly turned to ice and then snow. You didn't have to be a "polar bear" and go in the water in that storm. If you were outside, unprotected, and anywhere near the coast the water found you.

Shee-it. I'll take my chances with the occasional earthquake. We only get one every five years or so and, in this area, they generally don't do any significant damage.

Been alternating between Winter and Spring-like temps with thunder storms since December. Actually, didn't see much in the way of Winter during December. The previous 5 years, Winter has been bitter cold in this area with a particular low dip in 07 and 08. Last year was also damn cold until mid April when it suddenly never went below 70º until early October.

Still have February and March to go and we've been known to get our snow then if we do get it. Last year we had a White Christmas and it seemed that every chance for precipitation was a chance for snow for the whole season. Ice, forgot ice, got a lot of ice.

Tonight: Snow likely, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 30. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Saturday: Rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 1pm, then a chance of rain between 1pm and 4pm, then a slight chance of rain, snow, and sleet after 4pm. High near 38. East wind 9 to 16 mph becoming north. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Yeah, that's a result of these crazy "long spring seasons" that run from December to the beginning of summer" When you start getting abnormal summertime heat and humidity in January and February it is often punctuated by severe weather in the form of thunderstorms and twisters. Particularly for you guys in the west and south.

As far as the weather here goes the mild shit is back and it looks like its here to stay for at least the rest of this week into next. The crappy part about it is once spring rolls around it's just going to be a continuation of this crap. perhaps salvation will come in the form of a hot humid summer. But at the rate things are going the summer will probably be garbage too.

Perhaps in rural areas, but certainly not that I've seen in metro Denver.

Denver really doesn't get that much snow. But.. a few inches tends to cripple the city, a foot is a lot. But the good news is, 2 days later it's usually around 60 degrees and everything melts away. We get into real trouble when we get several good dumpings & then it stays cold -- which is rare. One year not that long ago.. they dumped all the snow at Coors Field (baseball stadium) and it didn't melt before opening day. :)

Depends on the part of Alaska too. We get huge snows here (except for this "spring-winter" so far ) because of the strong coastal storms and nor'easters. Seems like extreme upstate NY is finally getting some "winter" this week. But its still quite mild here.

They've always been here. Boulder is liberal, Colorado Springs is Focus on the Family turf.

Well lets see. Feb 17th and we have seen only 1 snowfall (that melted in 2 days) this winter. Temps have been a moderate mid to upper 40's all winter and, unless all hell breaks loose it looks like we are going to end with a very mild and almost snowless winter. Almost the exact opposite of last year and the year before. Thus far our most severe winter storm this year cam not in the winter but way back in October. Cool and rainy here right now. But still, no snow or anything even resembling the traditional image of a cold snowy winter. And now that we are coming in to March the spring warming should be starting to show so my expectations of any real arctic cold snaps or rough snow storms has gone down to almost zero. Basically from my standpoint this winter sucked big time.

i guess I'll have to chalk this one up as a wimp winter. I basically wrote this winter off way back in January. Hopefully next winter will be better and will kick some ass.

Now I am thinking, once we get past the spring crap what will the summer be like ? Will it be rough or will it be a wimp summer to match the wimp winter ?

Somehow, at least with respect to weather, I think I am living in the wrong part of the world. Maybe I belong in Northwester Canada or in the Yukon region or some similar place known for rough extremes. Who knows. I always like the rough stuff. Rough winds, rough water, hot weather, cold weather, blizzards, heavy rain, heavy thunder, lightning, hail, etc.

Well, they say the United States gets more tornadoes than any other country in the world. And, even in other countries that do get them, they tend to not get them as strong or severe as in the United States.

We haven't had any here thus far, this area doesn't get them often (knock on wood), but we just had a wacko winter that was more like a long drawn out spring with lots of mild clear and very dry days and no snow or ice at all.. But now that spring is approaching it will probably revert back to wanting to be winter. Temps tomorrow are supposed to be up near 60 but then go down to around freezing at night with some possible thunderstorms so, who knows.

I guess these days there is less recognizable pattern to weather and it seems more to be, anything goes.

Well, I have the air conditioning up and running. I will say this is probably the earliest I have ever brought the air conditioning online. I have a feeling that the air conditioning is gonna get one hell of a big time work out this year. I think we are going to have one hell of an extremely long hot summer.

Well, we haven't had the 12" threatened...but we've had 4" since I mounted my rain gauge at about 6 last nite. My septic system is now non-functional, and it's still raining. Fortunately, we're getting out of dodge today to head down to San Antonio/Lackland AFB...the youngest graduates from boot camp this week! Hopefully, enough of the standing water will have run off when we get back to allow the septic to work again.

Supposed to be around 80 on Thursday. This is insane. Trees budding over a month in advance. 100+ year weather records being broken in many places.Lot of people say its delightful. Yeah, delightful until the cold front blasts through and creates some powerful F5 tornadoes. Not to mention blazing triple digit tems through the summer.

It's been in the upper 70's to near 80 here for the last three weeks, I love this....

Well I would like to continue but I simply must empty the rest of those old cans of R-12 and R-22 refridgerant littering my garage. Next I will dump a big batch of Methylethylketone and laquer thinner.

I sure would like to know what's causing this warm weather though....

Some people say the sunspot cycle. Others say global climate change, pollution, etc. I think its a combination of things. Part of it might be climate change, i.e. more severe and unstable weather. A lot of it mainly seems to have to do with the jet stream and extreme positive Arctic Oscillation. What I am thinking is that if this condition continues for the next several months we are going to be in for a long and extremely hot summer with few breaks in the intense heat waves. As hot aire pushes up from the south with little or no interference or moderation from arctic cold fronts the very warm air will settle in and remain with us for extended periods. However, its too early to say for sure.

Friend of mine up in Minnesota say's this is the mildest winter he's ever seen in his life. I've been running the air conditioning here. Never used it regularly this early in the season.

As for me I hate this mild crap.

I still say it's all the CFC's I blew off in the front yard to keep winter at bay. Screw the Seals and Penguines, we need warm weather and by golly we deserve it. Jeez it warms up a couple of degrees, some Polar Bears starve, and everyone gets all weird about it.
