MILAN—
Recently, a passerby noticed something very peculiar about the addition being added on to the Illinois National Guard building in Milan.

The design in the building containing a secret message.

Dave Mayfield knows a thing or two about radios after collecting and operating them for 25 years. So, when he drove by the Illinois National Guard building a few days ago the design caught his eye.

"Took me just a second at first. I thought maybe it was a random pattern but it's not random at all. It's Morse code," said Mayfield.

But what the bricks say remains a mystery for most. It's estimated only one in thousands would know one wall says, "loyalty" and "duty", while another wall says, "respect" and "honor".

The Illinois National Guard put all seven of the Army values on new buildings built for the 2nd and 123rd Forward Support companies.

"It's still alive but not required by military. It's not required by ham radio operators to get a license anymore, so it's kind of going by the weighside," Mayfield said about Morse code.

Although you don't hear much about Morse code these days, you never know when or where it will pop up. At Salute on Seventh bar in Moline, Illinois, there's Morse code for S.O.S. on the front of the building.

"I guarantee you if you started digging into it you would find lots of buildings probably around the country and the world that have Morse code on them," said Mayfield.

Used for more than 160 years, the coding system has never adorned an Illinois National Guard building, until now.

The Morse code design on the building is the brain child of the architect Bailey Edward.

That's almost as good as the Morse Code built into the wheels of the latest Mars Rover (http://www.arrl.org/news/new-mars-rover-to-feature-morse-code). But, I have to ask: why would they be building an Illinois National Guard facility in Italy?

Yep , saw the Mars thing a while back , way cool . Re: the Italian question , I think it has something to do with nucyaler weapons and Rick Santorum . Sue can explain it better than I can ;-)
