It is sad that chemical dependency drives a person down to this level. I have seen several friends, and acquaintances do desperate acts like this, to 'get a fix'. They broke the law, and need punished. It is a shame that so many people have chosen to go down this path.

Well, in the case of chemical dependency I would blame it on the drug prohibition. When a person finds themselves addicted to a chemical substance that is illegal and comes at an extremely high price they may be driven to steal and even to rob. 2 things that can help. One is an end to our failed drug policy which does not work and just drives crime. If a person needs something to survive they are going to get it, one way or another. Prohibition is a dismal and dangerous failure.. The other is drug treatment on demand. It does no good if a person comes in for help and they are put onto an indefinite waiting list. If a person need help they need immediate treatment that can immediately stabilize their withdrawal symptoms and provide a long term treatment plan tailored to their specific needs and lifestyle.

If we simply took the 2 steps I mention above we would have fewer people in jail and less chance of incidents as the one in the subject of this thread. It would mean a safer and less harmful world for all parties involved.
