CERT = Citizen Emergency Response Team. Can you say WHACKER in a green coat, with a green bag?

I just got a visit. They got my address from the internet. They are hunting ham. Freaking morons!

I was nice..... as usual.

That doesn't even rate as a rant. Try harder.

Were they recruiting you? Did they want you to train them? Or are they just keeping track of you as (potentially at least) a competing whacker?

Yea, but it's still Obama's fault.

And I should clarify. They means 2. They weren't wearing their green jackets, but I know they were close by. They were looking for Hams. They are trying to start a team in McDonough County. I'm not sure team is the right word but couldn't make herd, covey, murder, pride, pack or gang fit.

A couple of years ago CERT came in Warren County, convinced a few of their members to take the Tech Test and I am afraid I was mislead (I thought they wanted to be hams) and tested 3 of them. After that, The leader made her favorite new Ham, Head Ham above all other Hams in the county and explained to the rest of us in a group why she decided the new guy, who couldn't program his own radio, spoke for all hams in the county. Then there was an animated discussion about her taking over the repeaters in an emergency, regardless of the repeater owners wishes. He was right there and I thought he was going to have a seizure. Y'all know how that worked out.

The New Head Ham did outfit the CERT team, Ham and non-ham alike, with brand new Chinese made hand held radios. Local Public Service frequencies and Ham frequencies programmed.

So, you see why I politely turned the gentlemen down. Not that I'd do anything to help them anyway.

Recruiting...um... or as they called it, meeting with Hams to inform them of the upcoming meeting/class/gathering of da whackerific! LOL!

I answer my door with my .44mag for ppl I dont know and say something to the ring of "T'fuk you want?". Okay, so not really but ppl in green coats I may have thought were surgeons there to give me a lobotomy and I may have answered the door that way. Id have told them "I dont want what you are selling" and shut the door in their face. But that is just me.

Same here, but sans pistola. I'm just plain "grumpy" when it comes to solicitors of any sort these days. Know what I want and how to get it; do'n need no help. "I'll call YOU."

Recruiting...um... or as they called it, meeting with Hams to inform them of the upcoming meeting/class/gathering of da whackerific! LOL! :rofl:I see.

Whatever you do, don't drink the kool-aid.

I don't think we have a CERT group around here. If we do, I haven't heard about it... but between ARES/RACES, SATERN, and SkyWarn, the orange vest crowd has this area covered. And come to think of it, the county is trying to do their own thing via the EOC operators as well... maybe that's the CERT guys?

The XYL who until relatively recently was the county EC was a piece of work. Now don't misunderstand me, personally, I like her and her husband, I consider them friends. But when she would put on the Hat of Authority, so to speak, watch out. She did not care to have her alleged authority crossed.

K3NPX (SK) the next county-over's EC, until his passing, was like that too. Personally, a hell of a nice guy. But when it came to any official whackerdome, it was his way or the highway, and if you chose the highway, he'd help you along your journey with a boot on the backside. A local PITA, an N3 named Jeff, was Dave's self-appointed nemesis... and didn't even live in that county, but made it a point to get in Dave's hair.

In another county, a group of "EmComm" hams split off from the main club and formed their own. Don't know what, if anything, they're actually doing though.

Whackerism is alive and well.

About the only ham I know of who's heavy into EmComm who's not a whacker is K3AIR. Mike runs the communications for the CAP wing in his area. But he is retired USAF, so he's actually had some training and has a clue. He's got some great stories, I'm trying to get him to give me a write-up of some for the newsletter. He won't put down on paper his tale of how he almost started WW3 at Checkpoint Charlie, but I'm working on him yet...
