But a good blow will make it erect in seconds. Oh, maybe it's not all that unique. Never mind.

If you have a specific CIRCUMstance, you can make a particular deCISION and give it a "destance". You wouldn't want to cut the thing after spending that much money on it.

I was just thinking. (dangerous at best) This would be perfect for HOAs. All that's needed is a foreskin to hide the antennas. Hmmmmm

Note to self. Contact patent lawyer after Thanksgiving.

I was kinda laughing at this thing to until I saw the 60 foot version attached to the back of an SUV. That thing could easily lift a small hex beam. At that point field day came to mind. A portable 60 foot tower that sets up in 7 min along with a Hex beam at 60 feet would make an interesting Field day setup.

Yea, we get that. That's not fun except one day a year. We're trying to have fun now.

This gizmo is a lot cheaper than a hydraulically operated mast of similar height. Might be nice for supporting the center point of an NVIS antenna for 75-40M. :chin:

I still say, if you get one with a foreskin, you could hide a log periodic in there.

How much do hydraulic masts sell for?

I have a 30 some odd foot hydraulic mast out in the garage that I bought of Craigslist for $150. This thing is big the bottom section alone must be 12+ inches in diameter. Unfortunately I don't have any specification on the thing and haven't been able to identify it. Looks like something a news truck would use. As such I have no idea what it's rated for.

It does work, one day we fired it up and extended it about 20 feet. I was planning on mounting it on a trailer but I can't seem to garner the enthusiasm to do it. I might just sell it as there are several people locally who are interested in it. I've been offered as much as $750 for it. One of the biggest mistakes I made was showing it to a few people, Because now there isn't a week that goes by were someone isn't pestering me about it.

--------------------------------------------
Edit..
Sorry haven't had my coffee yet..!! The mast I have is pneumatic not hydraulic.

Time for an auction with starting bid around 1K?

Time for an auction with starting bid around 1K?

I was thinking about that but it would have to be for local pickup or they would have to arrange for shipping.

Besides I still have this fantasy of finding an older van installing a bunch of radio gear and mounting the mast inside so it telescopes through the roof like the news vans. Maybe mount one of those compact 2 element Stepir's or even one of the cheaper compact 2 elements beams on top of the mast. Would make for one hell of a mobile :) Of course because of the economy I'm no longer in a position to even consider it. Although I can always dream ;)

As a side note this would bypass the problems I've been having lately at a park where I like to operate. The rangers will no longer let me hang wires in the trees or put up small tripod mounted verticals. They are quoting some new no structures policy. They even made me take down my buddy poll which was mounted on a 14 foot telescoping painters pole with 3 light guy wires tent staked into the ground. They claimed I can't use tent stakes or guy wires, I was going to point out that the 3 volleyball tents that some high school girls had set up were also structures staked to the ground but I was afraid they would pepper spray me then beat the hell out of me and haul me off jail.

The whole thing really pisses me off, I've been going to that park for over 25 years. It's a huge park with a giant grass field. I used to fly RC gliders there until they were banned because they are "dangerous" like the guy driving the golf balls half way across the park isn't? Or how about the people who practice archery there. Somehow I can't help but think arrows screaming across the field are a bit more dangerous then an old CG Gentle Lady gently floating about the sky.

Now I can't even operate a radio there, I really miss taking a picnic basket or maybe the Smokey Joe to the park, tossing a wire into a tree and lounging under a tree playing radio away from all the electrical noise, then taking a break once in a while to throw a Frisbee with my son or my wife. We used to take breaks to fly the glider, it sure was a nice way to enjoy the day and relieve the workweeks stress. What's sad is that the park hardly sees any use because of all the damn restriction. About the only people you find hanging out there anymore are the pedophiles who like to hang out around the bathrooms or how about the sexual deviant old men who like to park in their cars and wait for a hookup with some young man. I probably wouldn't mind so much if it was some cute girls but as it is I've seen some things walking back to my car that should have burned holes in my retinas. Yeah but my wire in a tree is a problem!

Talking about the parking lot I would love to pull into the parking lot during field day flip a switch and raise a 30+ foot mast out the roof, then I would flip the park rangers the bird ! Heck it might even scare the pervs out of the parking lot.

They are nice. I built up a news van for the AM station I used to work for, and put in a 40 foot Will-Burt. Pretty much the norm back then. Also had a generator for power and compressor to raise the mast. Had dual yagis on top with a Pelco az/el mount for the link back to the station, and all kinds of wireless mics, links, and mix-minus for the crew on site. It's original justification was for covering the impeachment of our then Governor Mecham, but found daily use for both the AM and FM sides. Came down to where we could be on the air anywhere in metro Phoenix with very short notice. It was a fun time.

A company I'm thinking of - Will-Burt, located in Orrville, OH - sells their commercial telescoping units for around $100/ft at last check. These masts are used by (among other industries) a number of area TV and radio stations for studio and sat-link antenna feeds from their remote rovers.

You get what you pay for, but for that kind of coin I could have an equivalent amount of Rohn 45 in the back yard.

Why is it that things that inflate, or blow up with air and expand, make people horny ? Beach balls, balloons, blow up dolly's, and now inflatable antennas ?? Must be a childhood sorta thang.

They work extremely well. Most broadcasters use WillBurt's products. The only caveat is that you really need to dry them off if they were extended in the rain, otherwise the seals get contaminated and wear out quickly.

I smell a Field Day deficiency. :squint:

A good friend of ours worked at Will-Burt when I met her, and another (former coworker) now does software development for the outfit. They're located roughly 20mi from me.

Nah, it'd be fine as long as you wiped the sections dry after you got home. You just don't want to leave them wet for extended periods of time.

I'd love to see the factory sometime. They make some pretty neat stuff.
