Uniden has released 3 out of its 4 new models. The SSB model is still pending review.

Our website has made contact with Uniden and they sent us these new models to review.

Here is a teaser picture of the 680 model, better pictures to come with the full review

I really wish someone would re-market a performance-oriented, old-school (double-conversion, crystal filtered) SSB/AM base rig...with an adjustable notch filter, possibly an IF shift and a speech compressor. A built-in frequency counter/clock would be a nice-to-have but not essential.

why not just re release something like an icom 725 or ts 440 that only works on 11 m with cb spec's
and make it so it can't be modded

Better yet, a completely potted in epoxy brick with just the little knobbies sticking out.

I want one with a hammer and sickle flag faceplate 'cause there's no party like a Communist Party.

Ohmigod, a new CB that doesn't look like a Cobra 29XLR/GTL/LTD clone. I'm shocked shitless.

Uniden is also sending us the new 980 SSB Version to review as soon as the FCC Approves it.

OK. Perhaps too close to the mic on the high setting. A bit overmodulated to my ears. That's just my opinion. Not intended to be disparaging.

That is ok, we noticed it as well, the actual audio is a lot clearer on the computer but for some reason the properties change once uploaded.

The Youtube version is louder through the computer speakers but that is the only difference I can denote.

The 980SSB looks pretty snazzy. About time somebody came out with a newer side band rig. And I do like the fact that Uniden ditched the classic CB look. Chromed plastic is about as hip as wood grain paneling.

About as hip as wood grain paneling on the inside of your van. But if you've ever seen the dashboard of a Peterbilt tractor, you'd understand why the CB manufacturers designed their products the way they did.

In any case I don't like this new-fangled CB thing. You can't put a Rebel Flag Faceplate on it.

I have one of these in very early vintage and excellent low use condition I modded to cover from 26.17 to 28.09. I should put it onto the 10 meter band.

Got one of these I modded to cover the same freq range as the grant. Watching those needles bounce while working some exotic DX was the cat's meow all righty.

My dad bought one of these back in 1977 I think. They were brand new and it cost him a fortune. I've always liked the look. When dad brought it home he called my cousin Delvin Jr over and they got to talking quietly among themselves, and the next thing I know old Delvin had the case off it, and was whittling a wooden screwdriver out of a piece of wood (said he couldn't use a metal one inside a radio, dontcha know). An hour passed by and Delvin proudly announced he'd turned it up and it was an illegal radio now.

Damn thing never worked quite right on SSB ...... I s'pose that was Delvin's doing...

I've always liked the looks of that radio. It would be one of the few CBs I would actually own.

I think they debuted a year after that:

I could get the dual clarifier pots to do 5 kc up and down on the course control, and 500 cycles up & down on the fine control. I never knew of anyone else who bothered to do that.
I'd remove the stock 11.325 meg crystal which had a low capacitance loading and replace it with a crystal rated at 30 pf. This eliminated the drifting problem that developed after the clarifier was worked.

Looking at the schematic online, very possible. The Uniden (Cobra/Robyn, etc) SSB boards used a LO crystal in the 11.3 MHz region and the Mark X's appears to be a 10.0525 MHz part. Though the schematic doesn't clearly indicate it, the PLL appears to be an -02. Uniden used a PLL858, MB8719 or 8734 in their various chassis.

I couldn't answer that question.... I thought Cybernet was the outfit that built the machine that killed all the people in The Terminator/Terminator2 and 3.

Well, it is a CB so I would not be interested in talking on it. I just like the looks...... It would be cool to strip it out and put the boards from a HW-101 in it.... or use the case for a Homebrewed Amp.

I just like the look. I'd put blue LEDs in the meters.

There were two DAK (David A Kaplin?) radios, the Mark IX which was AM only and, the Mark X was the AM/SSB model. If, you looked inside, what you would find on the AM model was a Royce/Midland radio board lashed up between the front plate and the tube finals. The SSB model was a "higher quality" radio (I use the term loosely); it had the circuit board from a General Electric "Super Base" with the PLL 02 strapped into the huge cabinet with the tube finals.

I don't recall doing any frequency modification as, the owners only cared about one frequency and, as far as the power modification, why bother; there were enough Palomars and Varmint amplifier floating around to keep the owners happy.
