King of Pop (http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/dr-conrad-murray-found-guilty-jackson-trial-remembering-king-pop-gallery-1.14907)

And why?

Must be based solely on record sales? He sure didn't make a very good role model, unless stunted emotional development is a good thing. Yea, the guy was prodigously talented as a dancer and entertainer, but why the hero worship? Is the amount of $$$$$ someone makes the sole determining factor here?

I can think of many, many other pop stars who not only made great music but were far, far better role models and much more deserving of this kind of hero-worship. And very few of them are ever mentioned.

And anyway, wasn't Elvis Presley "The King?"

If I remember right, MJ himself started that. Elvis was known as the King of Rock and Roll (coined by the industry), and MJ wanted to be known as the King of Pop.

Just a question: Where were you during the 80s?
He was everywhere and on everything.

If you're worried about what people call pop stars, it must be really comfy under that nice safe bed at night. Of course, only after you evict the monsters...

That happened in the 1970s. How do I know this? When I saw middle-school classmates making out/humping in the stairwells and back of the classrooms. :wtf:

You're just jealous because you weren't included.

EDIT: To be fair, my dance card wasn't exactly full back in my middle school days either.

To suggest a completely different direction for this discussion.....

So...I guess it was Michael himself who dubbed himself "King of Pop"? And that stuck? Seems to me that most, if not all of huge artists from the world of pop/rock music that have become superstars since the early 70's have one characteristic in common. That characteristic is that their lyrics are completely non-threatening. Even artists who survived the transition who previously had written very insightful commentary on the "state of things" wound up writing pablum.

What is "pop" ?

It's the noise you hear when someone pulls their head out of their ass. It's never heard in DC.

It's the hissing sound of your IQ dropping while discussing silly trivia.

Bob Dylan was dubbed "The King of Folk Rock" despite the fact that he never wrote nor played "folk rock".

What is "pop" ?It's what the natives in Pittsburgh call a flavored carbonated beverage. You and I know it properly as "Soda."
