I was chatting with an online friend who insists that NASA are a pack of liars run by Nazi's and that the size of Mars is either the same as the Earth or even larger. He bases this on the size of the Mariner Valley near the equator of Mars seems to take up the same width as North America does on earth. So I did some calculations involving equatorial radii and circumferences and arc lengths and other neato stuff and then I modeled them using a 2D/3D graphics program, projecting the Mariner Valley on both the Earth and Mars and guess and my Mars model looks exactly proportional to NASA's Mariner valley pictures. So, guess what...? Yep, NASA got it right !! as did many other astronomers going back through the centuries. Score +1 for science and a big -1 for conspiracy theory.

hah... you got me there Albert. I forgot about those "astronauts" (actors) on the "moon" in the 60's. Little did we realize then that it was filmed right here on Earth using props donated by aliens at Area 51 and on the dark side of the moon. :mrgreen:

I guess I didn't explain it very well. I used a 3D rendering program to project a 2500 mile long (using a much smaller scale) arc onto 2 spheres, one having a scale radius of the Earth the other a scale radius of Mars.

But I scrapped the idea and explained how we determine planetary diameters by measuring angular diameter and relating it to distance, much the way it was done since the days of Galileo.

I don't know if the gentleman I was conversing with is 100% convinced but I think I may have opened his eyes a bit toward how measurements are made in astronomy.
