yea they have football cards.. (i know cause I have some lol) I have so many of these damn cards, if i was able to get $1 out of every single card id be f'n rich.

I seriously have enough cards to start a damn card shop.

big thing i wonder is. are they actually worth anything.. if they are hell id like to make enough to buy me some radio crap.

For obvious reasons, people aren't buying them like they used to. They probably would be worth hanging on to because I imagine they will increase in value over time, again. If you did sell them now, you would most likely only get a pittance. Unless, of course, you have a rare one.

You still got the gum they came with?

Yep, I agree about the market thing.
Remember the Lady Di Beanie Baby?
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Beanbag-Plush-/49019/i.html?_nkw=princess+diana+beanie+baby
$30K in their heyday. Now the type of actual offers people get for them is $15.
You will note one of the ebay ones is priced at $175,000 but it will be relisted forever.
I was never into Beanie Babies but I did some reading on them over the Summer because a box of them were given to me and people didn't even want to give a single dollar for them.
"I'll give you 25 cents for this one."
"M'aam, that's a Rocky and Bullwinkle. I can't take less than a dollar for it."

Years ago, a good friend had some really old and collectable baseball cards from the early days. One was worth at least $20K. Then one day the whole BB card market just fell the **** out and his collection was pretty much worth a whole lot less than he paid for them. Of note, he did not pay $20K for that one card, more like $300 at a garage sale but for a short while, it was being listed at a value of $20K. He had it mounted under glass when he found out. He had a few other cards worth up to $5K at the time. This was about very late 80s to very early 90s.

I never had much luck using balloons. They last for a bit and then ...pop. I remember getting in trouble when i used my Mom's good playing cards as wheel flappers. When I was about 13 I got hold of a small motor and I wanted to fit it onto a bike frame to build a self made motorbike. But I would have had to weld mounts onto the frame to hold the motor and a the time I didn't have access to a welder.

Short of making "short deals" as with Ron above, the best bet is to take them to a card store, and see what they'd offer you. Sadly, I'm in the same boat, but most of mine are 90's era baseball cards, and apparently, there is little to no market for them.

The boss, who is a huge baseball fan and Pirates fanatic (that's where Little Miss Field Day gets it from) still laments leaving her card collection at her parents house. They're all gone. We figure that her brother (15 years younger) came across them and confiscated them... happened with some other stuff as well. Long gone.

Clemente, Stargell, a whole lot of other stars. Some autographed. Lost in the mists of time.

My son gave my brother-in-law the third degree on this back when he was collecting, as HE wanted those "valuable" cards for himself. (Of course, my B-I-L denies all). Then the bottom dropped out of card collecting, the local shop closed up (storefront is now gone, the mini-mall it was in was torn down when PennDOT relocated & expanded SR 88 a lane), and he lost all interest.

A baseball collector might be interested in "spots," but most of the remaining card and sports memorabilia shops might not give you a good return. The demand just isn't there. Seems that when the market collapsed due to saturation years back, it never really recovered to this day.

...and yes, if anyone has baseball cards featuring players on the Pirates, let me know, LMFD does still collect them, just for her own sake...

It might actually be worth your time to look up the ones you think might be worth something. At least inventory them so you can maybe post the list so some of the more Baseball knowledgeable might be able to help you. It could get you a rig and would be better than risking throwing money away.
But hey, I'm a pain in the ass about stuff like that and I'm more willing to sit on an item rather than throw it away out of lack of knowledge. I'm also willing to tell lowballers to go fuck themselves.

It depends a lot on the condition, apparently. I know nothing about baseball cards but I Googled "1967 carl yastrzemski card" and found one in mint condition going for $78.98 (http://www.ioffer.com/i/1967-carl-yastrzemski-topps-card-gem-mint-10-146501249).

It would be worth your time to go through them, or take them to a card dealer (call them first), and go through them together...but dont let him know you have no clue what you are doing, he will pick out the gems and offer you turds for it.

I have tens of thousands of cards in mint condition, i doubt i will make a fraction of the money back i spent on them. I have stacks, im not kidding, stacks of rookies of Emmit Smith, Aikman, Thomas...i have rookies of top hockey players, baseball, Shaq college card, Griffey Jr rooks, Jordan olympic card...all kind of shit. Its just a bunch of cardboard these days, unfortunately.

Unless you have a priceless artifact like a Mantle RC, Babe RC, etc...you need to pick through and see whats in the boxes and take what you can get, then sell the rest of the commons at a cut bulk rate just to unload them, then buy an MFJ, single band qrp rig, im guessing thats what you will be able to afford.

But since i am a collector, im curious as to what you find in there....and yes, check out that Yaz card.

By the way, you may already know this, handle the cards from the edges only, protect the corners, they look for that.

W2NAP
11-06-2011, 06:54 PM
alot of the cards are 87-94 some newer some older.

seems avg price on the baseball cards are around 15 cents, football around 20-30 cents (this is on avg)
seems football cards have more value. i got a stack in the 50cent to 2 dollar range.

the yaz card doing a bit of looking seems to be from 48 to 89 bucks.
the 71 bradley card seems to be around 50-90

but like everything all depends on how much someone is willing to pay.

truth be told. id love to get enough out of all this crap to get another hf rig. or the parts to fix the 450 I have now. (going to need boards for it IF, prob CPU board, hell if i could find all the boards but the rf id just redo the whole damn thing)

Not a bad pull, and those commons are about the average for the last 20 years or so, and you're right, it really depends on who wants them and how bad. If you get inclined to check them all, it would be cool to see what else you pull out of there!

Recognizing the return address, I smile, hand it back to her, and say "Go ahead. Open it." And she does.

She gasps "Dad! Look at all these Pirate cards!" At which point, Lucy Furr, who is now firmly on her leash, begins to drag me out the front door for her walk, but I have just enough time to ask "So, you like?"

A starter K3, which is already good, begins in the $1200 - $1300 range. They can go up to the $4 - $5k range fully loaded...but fully loaded, they are bad ass! Side by side with other similarly priced rigs, it may have the edge. Of course, it depends on what your preferences are. I like durability and good filters so it would be a good choice for me. I have yet to hear from a disgruntled K3 owner, im sure they're out there, but i havent seen them.

NQ6U
11-20-2011, 06:43 PM
Nice thing about the K3 is that it's modular. You can start out with a very basic rig and add things over time, ending up with a radio every bit as good as anything else out there without having to come up with the $5K in a lump sum.

While my trusty old IC-736 is ticking along quite nicely, I'm still thinking about what I'd replace it with when the time comes. I'm torn between building a K3 and buying some sort of SDR. I like the idea of the SDR but, at the same time, I'd like to get away from staring at a computer screen all the time.

W2NAP
11-21-2011, 09:20 AM
im still more of a older kenwood fan. I stay away from any menu driven radios. the bigger the radio in size the better for me.

as for SDR, id never go that route myself, i couldnt deal with pc/radio all in the same.

guess im just old fashioned
