Having just returned from Turkey it was very reassuring at how quickly organised aid arrived at the affected towns. Now the residents of Van, Ercis (pronounced "Erjish") and other towns have to survive the approaching winter without housing. Notably it dropped to near freezing overnight in Van recently (according to the TRT weather forecast) but I'm pleased to hear the Turkish authorities have accepted overseas aid.

Today we learned that a 19 year old man was rescued alive.

Istanbul is apparently overdue for a massive earthquake and this is where much of the population live, Californian residents may have some thoughts on this

Yeah—move to Nebraska.

Seriously, the problem in Turkey is either that there are not adequate standards in place for constructing earthquake-resistant buildings or rampant corruption that has allowed many buildings to be erected in spite of them. The latter thing has happened in Mexico, which is why they received so much damage in the Easter Sunday earthquake two years ago.

Here in CA, even older buildings have been retrofitted to stand up against a temblor. We would not survive an earthquake of the same magnitude unscathed but certainly with far fewer casualties than they had in Turkey.

Nebraska may not be such a good idea being the southeast corner is within the New Madrid Fault earthquake zone long overdue for another one. Check the map and try another suggestion. (;->)
