I had a nice chat with W5TOP in Texas this afternoon on 10 AM. I was using the Viking Mobile Xmitter and HQ150 rcver. It motivated me to bring out a big gun. After a nap of about 10 years, I slowly awakened it on a variac. After a half hour or so I cranked it up to 115VAC and all seemed fine. After all the switch contacts were cleaned, I put it on a dummy load . About 2 watts output and decent sounding audio. Then I hooked it up to my antenna and the receiver sounds good. I have a crystal in it for 29.05. Keep an ear out for me in the afternoon. On second thought, you better use both of them

Yeah, the other one has a patch over it. Arrgh!

That really looks like fun. I'm pretty sure that if I saw a decent looking tener at a hamfest I'd look at it closely -- 'cept maybe by the time the season opens next year ten could be dead again.

But cool! And how's about telling us more about that Viking mobile?

Single 807 modulated by a pair of 807's, puts out about 25 watts . Home brew B+ power supply. Using my Alinco 12V supply to lite the filaments. D-104 Mic. The vfo is a bit drifty on 10, so I use a crystal most of the time.

Very nice. An area friend has a Zeus and a Thor, and I used to play around with an HA460 on 6M. Still have an HR2510 and a 2600 for 10M AM work but that's about it as far as "true" AM is concerned.

Will keep an ear open for you on 29.050.

But cool! And how's about telling us more about that Viking mobile? It used to be easy picking to find a Sixer or a Twoer at a hamfest for around $15 - 20, although most have been badly butchered over the years.

Prices on them now are much higher. Shouldn't be, but that's another story.

A couple of years ago, someone had a pristine set of four (only one model of the Sixer not both) at the Butler Co ARA Swap'n'Shop. I have a picture of them at home somewhere. His asking price was around $300 for the set, IIRC.

Now if anyone is interested, I have a pair of Twoer's that I picked up; one's in bad shape that will be a parts rig for the other. The original plan was to rehab the one and have a little fun on 2 M AM, but I haven't had time to work on them yet. I could be talked out of them for the right trade (PM me)...

The hardest part of 2 meters AM is finding somebody to talk to.

I'd talk to you on AM. I've had about a dozen AM QSO's during the recent openings, and worked some of them QRP.

It was dead yesterday.

A huge CME hit the Earth the night before and pretty much killed 10m, at least for a little while.

The hardest part of 2 meters AM is finding somebody to talk to.If and when I get the unit rehabbed, I'll put the word out. I think there's an AM Calling Frequency, so I'll make sure I have a crystal for it.

I'm considering also that once I have the "good" one working again, I'll salvage what I can out of the "parts" one, and then consider another use for the case. A solid state "Twoer" with a VFO & CW, perchance? But first things first.
