Kind of just playing here, but after some SyncToy failures, bought a Synology DS211J server with the intent of doing some real backups. Intent is to have it run background backups while I pickle my liver offline.

Arrived today; installed a pair of approved Samsung 2TB drives. Couple hours to figure out how to create a simple volume and a "share."

Right now, it's busy as hell; lights blinking; no idea what that's all about.

Looks like a capable deal, but man... Anyone else here into this?

NAS in general?

I've done a bit of NAS and SAN work in my day :)

Up and running -- seems like a pretty cool device. I'm just using it as a RAID-1 backup box, but it's got a lot of other goodies in software (built-in BitTorrent clent?).... Looking for unattended backup, and it looks like it'll handle that.

ATTO disk benchmark says it reads faster over the LAN than the internal SATA drives in this computer.

Keeping my personal computer budget in line (HA), I may get one instead of getting a Mac Mini...

Very interesting device, I've been reading up on it.

$199.00 from Amazon, and drives are fairly cheap. Wow Man!

Ordered mind from NewEgg (same price as Amazon).

So far, so good, though the disk speed on the USB ports seems slow (says 19 hours to back up 675 Gig). I've just been looking at some of the other toys -- may have to play with that a bit -- looks like I can mount this unit from work via the net using DDNS. Hmmm....

Why 19 hours, Rob? Is it doing something special to the data?

Nothing that I can tell -- it's just slow. The main (internal) drives are MUCH faster. I'm guessing it's just the limitations of the USB 2.0 connection.

Maybe you need a larger gauge USB cord with oxygen free copper, directionally wound for optimum transference.

Perhaps an in-line hydraulic boost orgasmatron accelerator.

That's been sent to Nunavut to be gummed by toothless Inuit women.

Need some brilliant pebbles (http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina31.htm) maybe?

We have the makings for a traveling ham/computer related comedy show. Who's up for it?

I read up on their website, when you first hook up the drives, it goes thru a rigorous surface scan that can take a day or longer to finish. That's OK by me, just gotta be prepared for the delay.

Depending on the outcome of my second interview tomorrow, I might be.

The long format can be circumvented. If I read things right, it'll do bad sector mapping on the fly ;)
Once you figure out the software, it probably takes 15-20 minutes from installing the drives to ready-to-use.

As far as toys go, I have a one of these WiFi toys coming. It will do up to 1 Watt of power.

What's a Dosy?

Watt meters and such targeted toward the CB crowd. It has been said there are Dosy watts, Bird watts, etc.
