Docsis 3.0 is by far the best cable data standard thus far. The Cisco or Motorola stuff is the way to go..imho.

Docsis 3.0 is backwards compatible, so you can use a Docsis 3 'modem' on a 2.x network, but you obviously won't benefit from the channel bonding or other stability improvements.

Are you upgrading to an upper-tier service that requires Docsis 3?

I talked to Comcast on the phone. They told me that my modem was on the way out the door from being supported. They told me to get a DOCSIS modem. So I looked these up on their website. Maybe a 2.x would be fine. I guess I can call them.

If you have to buy your own modem, there's no reason not to go with a Docsis 3.0 unless you're in a real budget crunch. If you're not already Docsis 3.0-compatible now, you will be sooner than later.
