Anyone interested in playing around a little with QRP?

I've always had an interest in it; I've held on to an Ameco AC-1 that I obtained back in my Novice days (haven't fired it up in years though). A little ways back, I picked up a modified Ten-Tec PM-2B but haven't done much with it.

Yesterday, at the Butler Co ARA Swap meet, I found two gems I just couldn't pass on...

-- A complete, assembled, ready to go Tuna-Tin 2, with a 40 meter crystal, for $3 IIRC... it had been donated to the BCARA club table, and near the end of the morning, they were just trying to clear the table off.

-- An A&A 20 meter QRP kit, based on K9AY's design that was in QST a few years back, for $7. This was a ham just unloading stuff he no longer needed in his shack. He also had a Heath HW-8 (that needed some TLC to work on 20 meters) that went for the same $7 just as I got to his truck... and a pair of Astron RS-20A supplies he sold for $30 each, and you can imagine what the pricing was like on most of the rest. (I did pass on the Vibroplex brass racer paddles, not at $105... for that price, I'd just as soon buy a new set!)

I plan to be playing around with these the next few evenings. Well, that's the plan, at least...

I used to have an Argonaut 505 years ago. Very cool qrp rig.

I normally run QRP. Only two rigs in the shack that have seen much use the last few months are my Icom 703+ and Flex 1500.

Lowest power from the FT 2000 D = 10 watts.
Max i can make 1000 watts, between those 20 dB i use what is needed to make a reliable qso.
And yes, i already made many with 10 watts ;)

One of my many regrets is letting YF1 (ie The Ex) talk me into selling the Atlas 110 I had. Interesting little radio, it was the RX-110 receiver with the TX-110 exciter (not a stand alone transmitter). I picked it up after my original HT-37 blew it's power transformer. I had a lot of fun running 10 W out of that rig, especially considering the makeshift antenna I was using at the time.

Guy I sold it to was supposed to pay me in chunks, and I never did get the last payment from him. I'd gladly reimburse him if I could get that rig back today!

When I worked at Westech, we sold the Argonaut 509 and then the 515. I always liked those rigs. I liked the original Argosy better though... hotter receiver, and it could be cranked anywhere from 1 to 50 watts out. One of these days...

Yeah I do QRP. Quite a few homebrew/kit transceivers here. I find best place for QRP is out in the middle of nowhere where you can get up a good sized antenna and have very low background noise. Always been surprised at who can hear me, even with 5W ssb on 80m.

$5 ought to cover it. Let me go dig the crystals up before you send fundage. I have two collections of rocks: One box has HC6/U and FT243 and the other has the smaller versions. Pretty sure where the box containing the first lot is, and there's a 7125khz crystal on the loose in the shack.

I actually subscribed to a QRPp newsletter years ago. Using less than one watt was the game.

Made a number of 40 meter contacts with half a watt, homebrew xtal tx. There are still some groups that promote it.

Most 40 M QRP these days is around 7030, since 7040 & vicinity became the digital zone.

And now that I've got the HF6 fixed, I have a good SWR on 40 again. (Hose clamp on top failed, causing the top section to fall into the one below, and a bolt worked it's way out further down, causing the "H" tube to fall into the "G" tube. Shortens the antenna by about 7 feet, no wonder it suddenly stunk)

You still in the Volvo tractor, Kevin? Maybe there's enough difference in the amount of metal between it and the Freightliner you were driving to change the tuning.

Yes, Carlo. That seems to make the difference. Not to mention being able to mount the Tarheel II in the clear on the mirror arm.

How do you like the Volvo? They seem to be kind of polarizing among drivers. I liked the one I drove for a couple of years but unless you get the bigger model, it's true that they have less room for storing your stuff.

I plan to live forever. Oh, jeeze, why??Well, some religious scholars & philosophers have maintained over the centuries that there are some that neither Heaven nor Hell will accept, and if there isn't a Limbo or other waiting area in between... that means there's no where to go, therefore, some can't go anywhere, and have to stay put here.

And if you're not into philosophy... then, why not?
