I saw these odd looking critters today , feeding on our butterfly bush. Anybody have a clue what they are?

Its a hummingbird moth. We get them in the greenhouse. Freaked me out the first time I saw one. At least that is what we call them. There are different families of them I believe. Think it belongs to the Sphinx moth class. Anyway, if you search hummingbird moth youll find links to identify that particular one.

Np, I cant believe they are indigenous to this area though. I have lived here my whole life and until 2006 I had never seen one. It was a sight that's for sure. But now I see them all of the time. :P Only ever in my Greenhouse though.

I have seen some like that before, different markings. They were called a "Sphinx Moth" in MN, with different markings. Really interesting fliers. I used to collect bugs as a kid, and caught a few, they got long pins stuck in 'em...

Dad is a retired entomologist, so collecting bugs was something we used to do together. I looked them up, as I sure as hell don't remember the Latin stuff.

Genus Hemaris http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemaris#Species

Ever heard of "Skippers"? Lots of those in CO, sort of in between a moth and a butterfly.

The genitalia of the male are asymmetrical, having the uncus divided and the two lobes subequal, heavily sclerotized with a rounded apex.

Man, don't you just hate it when the lobes of your uncus get divided and heavily sclerotized?

The ostium bursae of the female is angled to the left.

"Her ostium bursae had a left-hand thread..."

Cool on Pop being the bug dude. Great stuff to do with your kid.
I took a Genetics class where the labs ran thru generations of Drysophila melonsomething <close but no cigar>. Fun stuff doing the phenotype counts...resegragating...and all the shitz for beatin the Hardy-Weinberg stuff in yo head. Forgot alot of it... Used the 50 ml vials I think and one had to use just the right amount of chloroform to "sleep" em out for the observatations/relocation. If you OD'd em them the wings would shoot forward and that colony would be phucked. Needless to say...set up reps cause your gonna kill a few lots at the start. Fun stuff with bugs...
A nice well done bug collection in a fine case with a glass cover is a work of art...all labeled and shit..an OCDer's dream.

now that I'm grunting out the long term mem banks from the wayback..it might have been ether that we used. That was back in the good old days when you could sling organics ... hell we used to smoke cigs in the lab...as long as you wore glasses you were cool....and no mouth pipetting...woots.
