Australia is the home of the Bunyip...They are an elusive creature that lives around creeks in deep dark gulleys...There are many old aboriginal tales of the Bunyip catching and eating any unwary human who accidentally strays into the Bunyip's domain....Around here where I live is prime Bunyip country with many deep dark gulleys and creeks...Often during the night one can hear weird screams wafting on the breeze especially around the full moon..Unexplained disappearance of the odd dog and livestock can be attributed to this menace....They are masters at hiding and I have no record of one actually been caught...However many an old bushman has left the wandering life and moved into town and given up the drink and joined a church after their terrifying experiences of being stalked in the night by these horrific creatures..

Australia is a strange and sometimes terrifying country with many unexplained mysterious and elusive creatures...Fair Dinkum.....:snicker::snicker:

And then there was Sheriff Link Appleyard in... The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.

Oh Bob, you forgot a few things. They don't just live around creeks and dark gulleys, the Bunyip River is infested with them. So is Parliament House only there they're disguised as the Liberal Party of Australia. The most dangerous place of all is Bunyip, Victoria. They're highly territorial and constantly hungry so a word of warning, stay clear of the aforementioned places and beware the Bunyip, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun the frumious Bandersnatch!

Yup, Oztralia is a dangerous place and not all dinkum is fair. I don't know where Bill got the idea that mutant Kiwi with a bottle of beer in its hand was a Bunyip, Kiwis are strange birds that do odd things with sheep. THIS is a Bunyip.

You got me started. Andy's Gang was the greatest, strangest show on Saturday monring TV. Natch, Andy "Jingles" Devine was a ham, so you wouldn't expect anything less than capering evil squeeze toy Froggy humiliating all manner of blowhard authority figures, backed up by musician cat Midnight and mouse Squeaky shackled to their tiny instruments. All this while the Fat Man heaved with maniacal laughter and the same film clip of cheering kids looped over and over, a vision straight from an Insane Clown Posse video. Also in that vein, I saw a lot of Froggy the Gremlin in S.Clay Wilson's "Checkered Demon" character.

I also remember Bertie the Bunyip and I too never realized its namesake's monstrous reputation until recently, when I came across a description while Googling for a picture of the puppet. Little more than the name rattled around in my noggin since the 50s, back there with Rootie Kazootie, Koko the Clown and Tinker the Toymaker, speaking of visions straight on Insane Clown Posse videos.

And, lest we forget, Andy's Gang was the genesis of "Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy", which has taken on an meaning of it's own in the intervening years.

Willie the Worm sounds familiar but no visual recognition. Mr Rivets is a complete blank.
There was Sir Guy de Guy, and Fussy & Gussy, but I think they were part of the Bertie the Bunyip gang.

Ok, a bit off topic. Hey Bill, do you remember the League Island crane in the Navy Yard. The thing was friggin huge.

Just after World War I (http://forums.hamisland.net/wiki/World_War_I), a 350-ton capacity hammerhead crane (http://forums.hamisland.net/wiki/Crane_(machine)) was ordered for the yard. Manufactured in 1919 by the McMyler-Interstate Company (http://forums.hamisland.net/wiki/McMyler-Interstate_Company) in Bedford, Ohio (http://forums.hamisland.net/wiki/Bedford,_Ohio), the crane was called the League Island Crane by its builder. Weighing 3,500 tons, the crane was shipped to the yard in sections, and it was the world's largest crane at the time. The "League Island Crane" was for many years the Navy's largest crane.

Looks like I'm getting disinformation. I hate it when you search something that's incorrect and get pages on the incorrect entry anyway.

Nope, don't remember the Hiroshima bomb either.
Remember this one? The bow of the oil tanker landed a mile away.

It wasn't that long ago. I remember being able to see it rising above the trees, while driving NE on Red Bank Ave. in National Park. That was around 1962. I forget when it was removed.
I rember the explosion ar Fort Mifflin. nasty.

I worked near the Airport when the tanker blew up (not there when it actually happened) and went to see the big bow that had separated from the ship and landed a mile away with some co workers. My dad worked at the Atlantic refinery where it happened but he wasn't there during the explosion either.

10-4 Mr Matthews?

I remember Froggy and Andy, but rarely caught it because we had a LOT of trouble getting that channel in where I lived.

I guess I'll just have to remember Sonny Fox, Officer Joe, Capt. Jack, Chuck McCann and Soupy Sales who were a hoot in their day.

Soupy Sales was the best. I loved the show as a kid even though most of it went over my head. Pookie & White Fang.

Laughed with Sandy Becker yukkin' it up with the crew on Channel 5 WNEW, laughed at Claude Kirschner on WOR Channel 9 in his Terrytoon Circus ringmaster getup, kinda creeped out by Gene London on I forget which channel. Also, not localy NYC tv, but Ray Forrest's Children's Theater, the same clips of underwater diving in the Keys and sure, Sonny Fox, later on Wonderama, first, as I recall host of Let's Take a Trip on WCBS channel 2. Kukla Fran and Ollie beyond me, kinda pate for my Oreo taste. Kuklapolitans, gimme a break. Those were days of Bosco, Cocoa Marsh, and giant hinged demo Twinkies and Hostess Cupcakes that the host would open and point out the cream filling with a pointer. Silver Cup bread, Junket Rennet custard, Goodman's soup, Bohak, National Shoes ring the bell, Robert Hall with Les Paul and Mary Ford... oh the humanity and Soupy too...but I was late to Philo Kvetch and all that wonderful stuff...must have been living in the deep deep fringe way upstate then.

Speaking of the Point Pleasant/Manasquan Metroplex, is the Osprey still in business, home of the Longest Bar in the World? As a wandering around 50s kid in the Squan, I often pondered that claim. Even then it seemed unlikely, but I tried to keep an open mind.
