Took a direct hit yesterday evening. So far I have found: 2 TV's, Cisco router (installed yesterday), fax machine, telephones, surround sound, DVD player that are dead and it blew the fuse in my power supply. Luckily no radio stuff was hurt.

Yeah, consumer lectronics is easy to replace. Radio stuff is a little harder. Just saying.
So, did the bolt come out of your leg or did you absorb most of it?

No shit. On the other side of the RR tracks from where Applebys is, there is a medical oxygen place that has expanded to include adult garments and erectile dysfunction devices. It even says so on their large new banner.

Sorry to hear about the lightning strike but I have to RR with Charles on your radio gear not being damaged. The consumer stuff can be replaced much more easily and for considerably less dough.

BTW, the NWS is predicting severe T-storms in San Diego County again today, but most likely they'll be restricted to the mountains east of here.

Yesterday evening we had some close strikes. A couple of small pops behind the TV and everything was shutdown.
One minute the Sun was shining and the birds were singing. The next minute it was very quiet just before the sound of rolling thunder and black skies.

When we got struck it hit the fuel line going into the house. The fire took out 3 rooms and all of my gear. Fortunately the insurance company didnt argue with me. I got the cost of the radios as new. However I still had documentation and all rigs were still on the market at the time.

That lightning is rough. It strikes more often than people think. 2 weather phenomenon that have done that most damage here. Lightning and wind.
Around here lightning has damaged a stereo amp, a tuner, a hub, a NIC, and a radio. The wind smashed a picnic table.

I curse Benjamin Franklin for inventing the damned stuff in the first place. What was he thinking?

I'd be looking over my shoulder now Bob! :omg:

That's the road that runs parallel to A-bees on the other side of the RR tracks.

About a quarter mile down from here:

We were doing good until my friend stepped out the door and shouted "Is that the best you got"? (Stupid Fscker) :neener: I am at $3000.00 + right now. Still don't have the surround sound taken care of yet, or the fax machine.

Insurance, Bob. It's covered. Your 5 or 10 % deductible probably only applies to wind. Claim everything that's screwed up due to the strike. Why not? You pay for the coverage.

I have. As of this point, Nationwide "seems" to be going out of their way to make us whole again. I had an electrician out today (per Nationwide). He checked everything using a good outlet..... His comment was "Damn, it got all of this?". I'm sure that we will find other stuff as time goes by. When it struck, I was standing in the door of the garage. I had to go for an underwear change.

They will pay it. It's not reasonable to pay more to fix something that it's worth. They'll probably determine what's called Actual cash value (depreciated value) amd reimburse you the replacement cost if you spend the money to replace the items.

Check EVERYTHING. even your $10 clock radio. It's human nature to say "the hell with the small stuff", but it adds up after awhile. Don't assume everything is ok.

Have your house wiring checked also. They will pay for that too. Look for any burn marks around outlets or switches. It's easier to "Front load" this now, rather than approaching them 6 months down the road when your stuff has issues.

Good luck with that.

The one thing that really pisses me off was the new router (in service for less than 6 hours) was fried. I'm not sure if it came in on the "electrical" or the "cable" side, or both. But when it struck there was no thunder, I have never had that happen before. It was weird. Everything checked out OK, plus I have a new electrician now.

Have you asked your neighbors if they got a jolt as well? This sounds like a phenomenon I have experienced.

It probably kicked started their pacemakers and they started walking to the light :-D

I wonder if there is anything to the ground zero strike without the thunder sound?

My experience (two near-misses) suggests otherwise.

I don't know. I have been within 3 to 10 feet of ball lightning, 2 came after the thunder, 3 without and the rest I was unable to determine.

And I had a word with one of our Claims people. Definitely, have the electrician check EVERYTHING. Better to catch a problem in the making now...

Lightning hit a 50' cottonwood tree about a hundred feet away from our house a few years back. That strike certainly made a sound! It also scattered large hunks of bark over most of the block.

On another occasion there was a nearby strike and a simultaneous clap of thunder. Curiously, immediately following the clap, there was a strange sound that came from the attic...a high-pitched note that rapidly descended over a few seconds. It reminded me of the time I over-wound an alarm clock and the spring broke. I looked around the attic later and couldn't find anything out of order, and the only damage was some blown diodes in my MFJ tuner (disconnected from the antenna of course).
