CQ Artists.. CQ Artists.. CQ Artist..

HamIsland is in search of a new logo! Contributions are welcome from everyone! Unfortunately the only compensation we can offer is our extreme gratitude and acknowledgement. :) Some requirements off the top of my head...

- Suitable for print & screen...
- Scalable for logo miniaturization or variants allowing that...
- Preferably in a format easily manipulated by Adobe Photoshop (.psd) or GIMP (.xcf) with unmerged layers.
- Creative Commons licensing or wiliness exclusively and indefinitely license to HamIsland...

I look forward to seeing what you all can come up with. Thanks guys!

"Very large" - "high resolution" -- etc. :)

I'd like to have the option to put it on tshirts, hats, coffee mugs, etc.. not for profit, but as a promotional tool at ham fests and what not. So that needs to be pretty big..

If not a single logo, several variants of the same theme.. I'd like to brand the site and have a very specific and unique look.

HamIsland - Amateur Radio's Online Revolution (keep that theme in mind)

As far as tee shirts et al, I have no problem with you taking a profit on them if the money goes to the site.

And I will guarantee you at least one sale on a mug, a tee shirt and anything else that your devious mind can contemplate. Carlo: You might think in terms of embroidery as well as print and electronic. Might make a nice design for a golf-style shirt or similar.

Let the game begin, say I. And may the best designer win.

I have a lot of experience in this business, having first set out on my journey a half-century ago.

The graphic could work, but including any sort of photograph in the logo will severely limit the applications to which it may be applied. I would suggest keeping a logo purely as a graphic -- it could be combined with a photo for those applications in which such use would be suitable.

Yeah well, if all the dot coms were fonts and nuts, we'd all have a merry f&*king Christmas.
And either of them would look good embroidered. I guess that's how golf shirt people do it. I'm T-shirt guy. I've also been known to don a wife beater from time to time. I tried some of that iron on transfer paper in the printer in 2003. I guess it has come a long way since but you have to iron it just right. Too much and the surrounding glue turns yellow. Too little and it doesn't adhere well.

The drop shadow is a corporate thing. They don't accept designs without them. It's something that the marketing guys insist on but then again they are the biggest hooker and blow supporters in the country and make up 70% of the hooker and blow GDP.

Turned out not to be as big a problem as I thought it might be thanks to AI's Distort filter. Took a few tries to get it right but here we go. It didn't look right in the old color so I changed it to gray, along with the window frame and switched from a radial gradient to a linear one, which is what I should have used in the first place. I took the numbers off too, they seemed unnecessary.

FYI, I still have all the other iterations saved as-is so it's no big deal to serve up whatever version is decided upon for the final.

Maybe tweak it so the palm tree(s) become the cursor?

It could be one tree, or a pair of trunks with the space between as the cursor.

Or the moon with clouds could be the cursor, with mirror imaged palm trees on either side.

Or maybe a drink umbrella as a cursor... or a Gretchen Cone?

I guess I'm not understanding why the desire to dump that which has always graced the top left corner of the forum page. Lots of great suggestions to be sure, but why the sudden desire for change? I guess I'm not understanding why the desire to dump that which has always graced the top left corner of the forum page. Lots of great suggestions to be sure, but why the sudden desire for change?I somewhat addressed that. The current logo doesn't scale for multi-purpose use. The licensing of the actual image is unknown. And as we get ready to launch the new site, I wanted something fresh and cool -- something to build a brand around.

KG4CGC

I'm always concerned with licensing issues having dealt with trying to do original work for a complete site that was going to compete with Fubar. It never got off the ground but that was because the guy heading the project didn't want to take responsibility for doing any of the grunt work.

That's original art by me, copyright is not an issue.Oh! My mistake, my apologies.

You have to understand that one thing we have to ride herd on at work, so to speak, are people who don't think twice about "borrowing" images off the 'net for use in a presentation. Now it's one thing if it's material that's public domain, or that are otherwise made freely available... things get sticky when it's copyrighted, or free use is limited to non-commercial purposes, etc. So I tend to err on the side of caution.

Do you freelance? I have an idea for a "logo" for my club newsletter, but I can't draw a straight line by hand, despite my father's best efforts...

Regarding the artwork (let's call it what it is)...

I'm thinking of something in black & white, color not needed. Thinking on the lines of the classic 'Gil' cartoons, or Otto Eppers W8EA/W2EA drawings for QSL cards (see http://www.arrl.org/otto-eppers-making-waves & http://picasaweb.google.com/w8jyz.Bob/OldQSLCardsOttoEppers#)... and considering that the club's initials are WASH & the newsletter name is The WASHRag...

Imagine a tree on the left side, a line proceeding right, with a caricature housewife hanging laundry on it, or laundry hanging on it and said housewife is stereotypically gossiping along a fence behind with a neighbor. Suddenly, the line (no longer a laundry rope) has a coax feed on it. The line proceeds left (either to another tree, a building, or just into thin air), but the coax feed swings down into the back of a radio on a table (seen from the side?) with a ham yakkin' away at a mike, or pounding brass, or something. Thus playing on the "wash" pun.

That's the general concept. If that's workable (and I'm thinking of a top-of-page masthead or logo), I'll leave the sundry details up to you.

I don't think I'm the man for this one, Ron—I'm a lousy cartoonist. Palm trees and clouds are one thing, what you want requires somebody with a different set of skills from mine. I appreciate the offer, though.

I regret having lost touch with the artist who designed my 1979 WN3VAW card. Her name is (was) Sally C. Fink, I knew her from Penn State and the SciFi fandom group up there at the time; I met her through her boyfriend/fiance/husband/ex-husband N3CHT. She did some really gorgeous pen-and-ink work, and she was kind enough to do the drawing for me (not for free... of course, the $25 it cost then was a lot more money than $25 today!). She also did artwork for George's card, and for a card for the Penn State club (which I also own -- the artwork that is, well, after all, I paid for it!). Then we drifted apart after she and George moved back to Johnstown, and I lost touch with her, and later, him. Pity. I hope she is doing well, but I haven't heard from her in years.

I recently scanned the card, and did a little manipulation on the caligraphy, so I'll be able to use it again with W3WN -- after all, it was just a little re-arranging of the letters.

(By the way, the artwork IS copyrighted by me, just in case anyone asks. I really like this card, but I just don't want to see it become another "generic" drawing that someone out there is selling, ya know what I mean?)

Well the knob is pretty cool. Maybe two knobs, strategically placed.

Ham Island url on the left one, your callsign on the right one.
Back of the shirt: "Gretchen's Fan Club", and more Island Ads.

Eh?

It could be used in the opening credits of the new Island soap opera,

Beats me, but I hope it develops soon. I'm wearing my last T Shirt, and it's in shreds. I wish I was artistic instead of autistic.

The boat name changed to the "SS Misfit" ....... highly appropriate under the circumstances .... it gives you that suitable "Island" feeling!!! :agree:
