If things get bleh....and in the evening, I may pay out a bit more cable and call on 60m ch.3 to see if anyone is around. Anybody else have any ideas?

60m sounds like a good idea. Now, all I gotta do is get a hamstick for that band. But I want to do that anyway...maybe at the Newington or Piscataway hamfest, whichever I wind up going to.

Just stay away from people asking for free repair services on 60 meters... Remember last time?

All flashy and crap...yeah, how could I forget it...EVER!
All flashy and crap...yeah, how could I forget it...EVER!It will live virtually forever on eHam.
Seriously, 60, 30, 17 & 12 meters are the best places to go, since FD does not encompass those bands.

The beauty of the screwdriver antenna is that I can literally go anywhere between 3.5 and 30 Mhz. ;)

Hey, my radidio has a general coverage rx as well.
Hey, my radidio has a general coverage rx as well.
A previous owner opened mine up; hooked up to a dummy load it will put out a signal from below the AM broadcast band to 60MHz, although it doesn't provide full output at all those frequencies. I've been responsible with it but I have to admit to once being sorely tempted to blast the shit out of a local who was being an asshole on the Chicken Band.

The best thing, as long as you don't get too close to be seen as a physical threat, is to use a 5 watt CBHT and set it to 2w and dead key it near his antenna. It will read S9 on his meter and he'll think he's not getting out. He certainly won't hear anyone he's talking to.
When I was into CB at age 12, we used a channel 14 walkie talkie and taped down the PTT and hid it near the asshole kid's antenna. It ran that way for a few hours and AH kid didn't get on the air the next night but the night after ... he started up again so went back out there with a new battery. The funny part was that a cricket got near it and chirped into it until the battery died.
These days I would not suggest any of those things. All of them would cause loss of your Amateur Radio License as well as possible fines and jail time. Yes, some states will view such things as a menace to society at large. I mean, who knows what other crimes you MIGHT commit. I shouls also add that these days most AHs on the CB just park their 2500w amp at about 2KW and lock down the PTT for about 10 minutes then unkey for 3. It's their ass and it's the way they get tracked and nailed.

Hum, 60m sounds like a good idea but I suspect that it will be packed with those that dont participate in FD.
Is 60m verboten to FD ops, like 30, 17 and 12? (since 60 isn't a WARC band)

Bah, still lots of contacts to be had, trust me. I normally log a few hundred and Im not overly active during FD.

May not be warc but we arnt the primary users either. No 60, 30, 17, or 12.
Is 60m verboten to FD ops, like 30, 17 and 12? (since 60 isn't a WARC band)While there is no law or FCC (or equivalent) rule against using any of these 4 bands for contests, the gentleman's agreement since they've been activated for the Amateur Service is that they will not be used for contests.
The general reasons are:
(1) They're all narrow bands
(2) They may have frequency, power, mode, and/or access issues for certain license classes
(3) They're not all fully international allocations, or weren't at some time. Some remain shared with other services (such as Fixed and Government) to this day, others are still not allocated by certain countries to their amateur population.
(4) It was thought that it would give an unfair advantage to those who did not have stations capable of operating on the bands (although that has certainly become much less of an issue in the last 30 years)
Over time, the gentleman's agreement has been treated as if it were set in stone. ANY time in the past 20 - 30 years someone has seriously or semi-seriously suggested using any of these bands for contesting purposes, there has been a general outcry (to put it mildly!) against it.
So, if you read the Field Day rules, you will see that the contest specifically rules out these bands. And just about all explicitly do.

No 60m here. Will eventually coalesce on 17m, yah?

I'll be checking that one out, too. This weekend will be the first time I've camped with the radio and will have plenty of time to set up the hamsticks that I haven't yet -- 17 & 15.
Didn't make either hamfest this weekend, so no 60m yet.
As bad as the bands have been the past few days, i'd say let's try 17 first. Let's agree on a frequency for our net.
If anyone is interested, I'm going to spend Field Day working PSK31 as KJ6SEE, my club's call sign. I'll probably mostly be on 20m.
W5FQ will have 17 available . I'd love to have a place to show non-contest exchanges to some new licensees and a tourist or two . Likely to be more a teaching than an operating weekend for me , although overnight is usually just a few of us . Somebody pick a spot and some times , I'll try to be there.

Never mind. I decided it was in bad taste even for TIOMH.
As soon as I finish breakfast, I'll head to the truck and find a clear freq on 17. I'm in the middle of the.country (Springfield, Misery) so I should be able to hear both coasts.

Ah....another Murphy frustration on Saturday. Finally had everything I needed to cut down my 17 m hamstick. Argh!!!!!! It's an off-off brand that, out of the bag, resonated about 16.2 Mc. So I cut off about an inch, like with a 15m hamstick, and the resonant point barely moved. Cut off another inch, again, not much change. So I cut off 3", and brought the resonanat point all the way up to 17.25 Mc.
At that point my arm was tired from hacksawing that hard as nails stainless rod, so I gave up and started checking out my 160m antenna. Murphy was there, too. That antenna has a setscrew that's not the same as every other hamstick setscrew, ever. Of course I didn't have one that fit.
Well... I hung out on 17 and 12.... and worked Romania, Hungary, several Germans, even one in the Netherlands (not Cor). More fun than FD anyday!!!
