There are much better images on the web; this is a plug for the Metropolitan Museum and an offer.

Anytime any of you are going to be in the city and would like to take in the museum, let me know. I've got a membership that allows 1 guest, and I'd love to share my most favoritest building in the whole wide world. That's one outSTANDING building!

I just finished Picture This last week so it's kind of cool to see this painting.

CHIT! Now he speaks. I was in Philly for a month ending 2 weeks ago and would have gladly taken you up on the offer.

Say hi to this for me next time you're there:

Hey, Paul—not to belittle the MMoA at all but have you ever been to the Art Institute in Chicago? That place knocked my socks off!

And, BTW, there's a Rembrandt here in San Diego too:

Saint Bartholomew (http://www.timkenmuseum.org/collection/dutch-flemish/st-bartholomew), at the Timken Museum (http://www.timkenmuseum.org/) in Balboa Park. It's not a large collection but it's high quality and, best of all, there's no admission fee.

Very few things tops being in a class art museum on a slow day where you can just stand in front of these great works in solitude. My wife and I hit the Uffizi on a slow day. There was like nobody (well not packed anyway) there and we (sort of) owned the place. She went her way and I went mine and bumped into each other about 4 hours later. It was very hard to describe to each other each other's faves, so we finally said eff it and went for dinner on the Arno. Timeless places to get absorbed into.
Enjoy!

Yes, I have. That was a pilgramage for Night Hawks. Took me three tries to see it -- it seemed to always be on tour. Chicago's tops for a summer urban vacation -- especially with miles of swimmable beach on Lake Michigan!

BTW....after finishing Heller's work the one thing that sticks out are the coins painted on the floor!

I didn't have a chance to swim—my museum visit was in December, while I was waiting for my tractor to be repaired after my co-driver burned out the clutch—but, for anyone with an interest in art, the Art Institute is awesome. There's Nighthawks and American Gothic, of course, but also a couple of Botticellis and a brace of Braques, some Dalis and Cézannes and a shitload of Chagalls and Gauguins. Then, there's Picasso's Old Man With a Guitar set up in such a way that it sort of ambushes you as you come around a corner. I almost fell to my knees: "I am not worthy!"

Yeah, that was pretty funny. It's pretty clear that Heller thought Rembrandt was more than a bit of a jerk.

Good choice of the Vermeer, Billhelm; always preferred him to van Rijn. I am also a big fan of Hals.

Don't know that work but I'd LOVE to, maybe even in the biblical sense. She's gorgeous! Who's the artist?

The MMoA is just one of the motivations for sacrificing a station in my home.

There have been periods when I'd done the Met AND the Natural History museum a lot, and the distinctions aren't so apparent as they once were. The natural history museum has the cultural displays and sometimes I think of the MMoA as an expansion of those.

Besides the art, the MMoA is about the best place I know to observe contemporary human beings, specifically the female of the species. Not only are there plentiful specimens to gaze upon and enjoy, there's always something else to look at in the same general direction. The steps out front are an especially fecund place for observation on a hot summer's day!

It's a photo from a movie that was based on this:

Vermeer's most famous work.

She's gorgeous!
Not the word I'd use. Sensuous, voluptuous, greatly arousing the desire to savor, especially by taste.

You're a man after mine own heart. Noticed same when I was there a few years ago to see the Vermeer exhibit.
Not only are they exceptionally pleasing to the eye, buy their presentation also exude taste, sophistication, individuality, and intellect. Very appealing indeed.

I'm glad you said that. The lips were all wrong in the first photo. Those are the new 'modern' sculpted lips that really did not exist even 15 yrs ago.

I was thinking injections. The XYL works for the VCU Plastic Surgery Dept. and we had this discussion recently.
Apparently, lips like that just don't happen naturally.

Don't forget your camera when visiting. The only still photography restrictions are in the special exhibits. I believe that all permanent collection works have no restrictions except no flash (bad for the works). You can get a tripod pass (well, used to, haven't checked in a while) that allows the use of a tripod in less busy periods.

On on visit a couple of years ago I took pictures of my faves (see above). When I looked at them later I noticed that many of them were sketching sculptures of naked men! :cool2:

That was the rage for lips 15 yrs ago. Thank god they are toning it down, if not getting completely away from it now.
While visiting Philly last month a LOAD of approx 15 yr old black & black mix girls crowded onto the "El" (elevated/subway train) I was on. I had a good time studying a few sets of lips (no injections needed).

PS. The left side of both lips have a 2 tone color AND size seam that is easily noticeable giving the big lips a tacked on appearance.

Paul is reflecting on one sweet missed opportunity.
Damn, I hate when that happens.

What caught my attention was the turned ridge on the upper lip.
But, I am damn near blind now. I could tell you how I set the resolution on my monitor, but then I'd have to buy you a beer.

@ Paul. Isn't the Met donation admittance? It was 3 years ago when I was there.

I believe that it still is, with a (ungopodly high) "suggested" donation. In the rare occurrences when I wasn't a member I'd say "$5 for one" and usually they accept it graciously. Once, tho', some jerk made some sort of snide comment. I've heard people who grew up hear offer a dime for two.

Missed opportunity? Well, yea, maybe, but the question is...for what? ;)

afterthought on the women there:
When you can easily notice one with cheap perfume you know she'e out of place.
