South side of La Crosse near where I live just got ripped up by a tornado. I'm still in Ohio. Sounds like north of the city where I live wasn't bothered. A storm warning near here earlier, but just light rain where I'm at near Wright Patterson.

Tom: There saying stay out of lacrosse. Don't know how bad yet. The one here stayed on the ground from rapids to just one south of me in plover and on the waupaca. Shitload of branchs to pick up and green leif crap splattered all over the sides of the garage and house. Baseball hail in point. It was fun there for a while. Nobody hurt that i know of yet...

I've been in touch with some of the guys back home via IRLP and so far everyone I know is OK. I'll come in well north of town tomorrow late in the day so I'm not expecting and issues, but thanks for the info. KC9ECH is home from UW-Plattville and he says we just got some light rain at the house.

The hospital in Joplin, MO got wasted, as did their Home Depot and a bunch more. Several towns in northeast OK hit by tornados. 8-10" of rain so far as well. Some areas have also had softball size hail - golf ball size hail very common all over eastern OK tonight.

Joplin Walmart destroyed, Joplin HS destroyed, 24 confirmed dead. One Joplin cop got picked up in his car by the tornado - no word on him.

So far in Oklahoma this year - over 60 tornado's east of I-35, only 2 west of I-35.

What county are you in?
Delaware county, Oklahoma. If you're looking at a map, I'm 1 mile south of Ottawa county, and about 3 miles east of Craig county. Joplin is about 35 miles north east of me.
The town of Grove, OK had a severe thunderstorm last night that lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Not all one storm, but they kept firing up one after the other and merging over the town.

W5GA

We're supposed to get more of this chit today and tomorrow. The local news is saying now that 25-35% of Joplin is just flat gone. Joplin is about 50k people, and the largest town in quite a large area. It draws traffic from 3 other states (KS, OK and AR) to the town as a commerce center.

You're right....and they are already severe. Today won't be fun. I'm back down in Ft. Smith now (for the week - it's where I work). XYL, FIL and #2 son who is home from college have a storm cellar there next to our house...if necessary. 20 or so feet from the back door to the cellar. So, we should be good to go if there's a problem.

Corey, I could...but it's like living with the threat of earthquakes in Ca., it just goes with the territory. Honestly, when we moved here I told the wife that if she ever mentioned the word move again there would be a nuclear detonation in our living room.

I really feel bad for the families in the area who live there. I also feel bad for the people/crews going in to report and being hit with the site of dead people strewn about. I don't think they expected it to be as bad as it was.
Really sad and the radar map is indicating another round on the same spot. Maybe this time everyone will be cleared out, moved to higher, safer ground.

The outbreak of tornadoes that ravaged the southern US last week was the largest in US recorded history, the National Weather Service has said.
The three-day period from 25-28 April saw 362 tornadoes strike, including some 312 in a single 24-hour period.
The previous record was 148 in two days in April 1974.
The tornadoes and the storm system that spawned them killed at least 350 people in Alabama and six other states. It was the deadliest outbreak since 1936.

That was the last month spree.
With these added we certainly can speak of a very bad season in the USA.
Here our hearts and feelings go out to the victims, and pray for them.
Stay safe...

Not even counting the tornado that hit Joplin yesterday, the NOAA Web site says 365 have been killed by tornadoes in the United States this year alone. That's more than the number of people killed by earthquakes in the U.S. over the last fifty years, according to the USGS.

I'll take my chances with the earthquakes, Doug.

Boy am I in the wrong area! We've had a hurricane come through and do some damage, Hugo. We get tornadoes but not so much lately. We've earthquakes but nothing like the massive ones elsewhere unless you count the Charleston one a long time ago. We get floods but nothing like what we're seeing now to my north and west.
We've had blizzards beyond our capability to keep up with and I honestly don't remember the last glacier.

Did they pray for rain? Only a little funny. People don't realize to be careful of what they ask for and besides, I recall The Weather Channel setting up a show to chase tornadoes from special trucks that was a big let down for weather whackers.

Time to change the building codes. Why do houses always have to be like gingerbread cottages or palaces?
Underground and built to weather standards NOT Barbie Townhouse standards.

Cass, Tesch and a number of others - both current and former - have much better poise and presentation skills. If I want innuendo on the toob, there's always Sex and the City reruns.

I quit being gaga about Abrams sometime around late 2006. The goomba back and forth between her and Roker in the morning is akin to sophomoric morning radio shows. Obviously, Roker has NBC by the balls otherwise, considering all the shit canning that been going on in the last year or so, they would have never moved him to TWC. Then again, NBC cheesed it up even further than it was going.

Abrams reminds me of a hill chick I used to date in Mississippi. She's probably a live wire, and I'd almost bet she cooks turkey necks in plain vinegar.

The innuendo I mentioned is mostly between Roker and Abrams.
It's only disturbing because... well, it is the weather channel. The weather's either hot or nippy. Never both, unless those two are on getting nippy with each other during hot weather.

It's the weather channel damnit... And is it too much to ask that some weather phenomenon please put Cantore out of my misery. Please, please... perty please.
He's like the Geraldo Rivera of weather, and TWC is becoming an absolute soap opera with their stylized coverage of other people's misery.
Oh well, guess I could just time it to the 8's and then spin the knob.

Uncle Al is an agenda tool who is controlled by his parent network.

A couple of his "exclusive" report shows bore about as much leftward spin as the Balloon's right-twisting missives and tidily omitted more than a few key facts...an opinion which is shared by a good number of my contemporaries.

I do not trust a thing he says, nor the motivations behind his words.

Paul Goodloe, Vivian Brown et al project a much more professional picture of the minority meteorologist. It really torqued me to see these folks and a few other African-American weather commentators shuffled off the mainstream slots, when in fact their presentation skills are better than most of TWC's on-camera personalities.

Currently it's about 87 here. Feels like someone dropped a big freeze on us compared to the last few days.

Presently sunny and bright, 79F; we could use some rain -- a nice, long, soft rain, the fahmah's fren.

I hear ya but there's not such thing as 'soft' when it comes to weather this year.

Alas and alack, you may be right. It's Algore, Nostradamus or the damned Mayans -- all of which were Democrats according to some dim lights.

70° here with the usual 5 mph westerly breeze off the Pacific. We're not likely to see any rain before October but that's normal for the Left Coast.

We just experienced the perfect morning in FM17. Relaxing on the deck with the birds endlessly shrieking whistles of joy.
Too bad the day is not my own.
