View Full Version : What to do with 110V AC 330 cycles?

The Drake DC-4 has a unique feature. It's got an ac jack for 110v, 330 cycle AC. Never heard of that before -- but it'd be handy for fixing a radio in the field. You could power a light and a soldering iron with it - it's good for 150 watts.
Anyone know how this came to be?
Some Navy surplus gear uses hi-freq 110V AC power, maybe it's for that?

Maybe like a Bell APU?

Only the pink ones.

Light and soldering iron OK. Coffee maker and refrigerator, uh no.
Guy brings a stereo in the shop to listen to while he fixes stuff. Guy plugs in a coffee maker and the fridge into the AC sockets on the back and almost immediately burned up the rectifier bridge from the overload. This was the maintenance guy. You might be redneck. Your mileage may vary by dosage.

The outlets on the back of a stereo go through the PS? That's a new one on me.
Me? I plan on plugging a linyar into that socket. Think it'll support an SB-200?

APUs put out 400Hz power, trouble is there's no such thing as a Bell APU... just another Baron Von Cowthief tale. (;->)

Got my answer - it's for an R-4 if you're using the DC supply. Hmmmm....A C-line in the car? Uh-oh...could get expensive!

I only know about the results. I replaced the diodes and used it for another 10 years.
Lafayette LR-810. Lots of nostalgia in that one.

Just traced the DC-3 and DC-4 schematics and it looks like the DC-4 can be plugged into a TR-3 directly with no mods. As a sanity check, did I get that right? I'd hate to wind up with B+ on the filaments!
This puts me very close to running AM mobile -- a holy grail I've been pursuing for years.

Just crank up the old Victrola!

Thanks! Hope I don't let the magic smoke out.
Probably not. The DC-4 looks and smells brand new inside. This makes the long, long drive out to Dayton well worth it.
