I think MS will keep the free personal service. The conferencing and other applications will give them an edge in a market segment they have been looking to enhance at the expense of Google, Apple and others.

I think the problems will come from the telcos.

You'll get more ads with the application now,
targeted via your MSN and Bing activity.

you need a webcam and microphone, and then someone to talk to. Oh, and a fast connection helps with latency.

The laptop has all that (well, except for the someone to talk to). Now what?

That's easy. Never get it working and you'll be all set for what MS brings to the table.

Skype is already a disaster. Now add Micro$hit, $murf city!
And, Magic Jack... concept is WONDERFUL... but some cable internet providers (read: Commodecast) are beginning to block Magic Jack, and Commodecast has its sights set on blocking Vonage, also. Oh well....

I've only had one rejected call so far with da magic jack. To duluth of all places. Got ahold of him on the radio anyway.

The alleged rumours that Comcast is blocking Vonage seem to go back to 2006 and seem to be unfounded ?

However, are there any new allegations of this ? I'm using Vonage via verizon and one would think that if anyone is going to block Vonage it would be Vz.

If I'm not mistaken, Skype was owned by Greedbay prior to being bought out by M$. And Greedbay will get their grubby little hands in your pockets at any chance they get, so obviously there's more money to be made by keeping it a free service.
