Today, i made the final deal on the brain components for my new studio. I bought the Mac G5 that was the mainstay computer at Zen studios/Dustree productions for years. This computer recorded and mixed numerous albums, a couple of them signed acts on tour right now. It has about $20k worth of plug ins and some crazy effects i havent even began to deal with. It is a complete pro recording system...im stoked.

Once i get some of the big production songs done and mixed that i have in mind, ill post a linky. Many of you probably arent as fired up about it as i am, but i know some of you are also audiophiles. Im just excited because the deal was lopsided in my favor...like houses, electronics are a buyers market right now.

Schweet. I totally get that feeling. What software recording suite are you using?

I don't want to rain on your parade but I hope you didn't pay too much for that G5; it is pretty much obsolete these days since Apple has switched to Intel processors. It won't even run the latest version of OS X.

That probably won't matter much with its intended use, for some time anyway. We use a dedicated G5 to record our ramblings in the jamspace and swap files back and forth from our various home machines constantly. No problems yet. Works great. Seems like the crappiest Apple product can handle music production better than most PC's.

Okay, cool. I don't know much about audio production stuff, just a Mac user and sometime consultant for over twenty years now.

I paid $450 for the fully loaded G5, 27" flatscreen, keyboard and ball mouse. It is running Digital Performer 5.1...and Mac is the only way to go for recording. This one will do everything i need for a few more years. PC is for games, email and porn.

It's the software that makes it go... duh? You did very well, curious as to the apps you got.

About a year ago, missed out on a loaded Pentium IV with AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max, and a bunch of Adobe products. All updated, all legal software licenses. By about two hours... $600. Dayum.

Huh?

Yes, pix. As a long-time competitive shooter, I can't hear worth a damn.

Okay, $450 is a good deal. Even old Macs really hold their value and if that's an Apple flatscreen monitor, it's worth that much all by itself.

The studio is not even in existence yet, the G5 is just a really heavy ,metallic tower so its not all that exciting. But what is can do is pretty cool. He got the latest Mac so this one is going to me...i always get the call for these types things first. :agree:

Heres some of the details of the tower.

*Mac OS10 version 10.4.11, Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC G5 with 4.5 gigs of ram
*Westinghouse 27" monitor*Mac Pro Keyboard
*Logitech track ball mouse
Installed: Adobe Master Suite CS4, Final Cut Studio, Digital Performer 5.11, Microsoft Office 10

Ah...the memories. Reminds me of when I brought home a brandy-new VS-88EX. Wow! Damn fun producing on equipment like that. Enjoy!

I got a similar deal not too long ago. A fully loaded G4 that was used as an artist workstation. I got them for free (They were going to be trashed). I found them a new home with a disabled gentleman trying to get set up as a graphic artist.

Won me a couple of karma points or something.

G5 Towers are probably the nicest-looking computers Apple ever made:

Nice!!!

Here's my modest setup (excuse the hand built furnishings.. I'm not much of a carpenter):

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j191/faze4djs/WB0LSRStudio.jpg

I'm using a PC (A64 FX-62 based) with a Mackie Onyx 1620 mixer with firewire audio interface. Dynaudio BM-5A monitors, Blue Dragonfly mic for vocals/sound capture, and an M-audio Keystation88 midi controller. Ableton Live Suite 8 software with more VSTs than I can count. I have nearly 1TB of samples, loops etc.

It's awesome that you were able to buy the whole system outright.. pretty sweet deal for sure. the only experience I have with Macs for DAW work is using Logic. Never used Digital Performer..

Also, the concept that Macs are "it" for production is changing slowly but surely. When I built the PC above, the power mac G5 was the standard, but today's PCs are plenty juicy enough to do the job. Logic (available only for Macs) is being supplanted by Ableton more and more (even on Macs) due to the fluid workspace and extremely good audio engine.
