On the 27th. Got whacked pretty bad, from commentary I've read.

George, have you (or anyone else, for that matter) heard from 'VGB?

The closest I could get was Crossville, TN. W4XKE (John) runs a link down there, and it about 68 miles from Apison... Finding nothing logged in for Chattanooga, which is one of the closest cities, and John didn't know of any off hand.

After going through this, I'm considering hopping onto the NTS net here, and passing a H&W message down there. If someone is closer, they might want to send in the NTS message to allow for fewer message hops.

Taking into account the population of Apison and the number of victims the odds are 99.7% that Mack was NOT among them.

I realize this isn't helping and we don't know how long the road is but chances are that they're at a shelter or with relatives right now. If that is the case, he may be a little harder to contact unless he has a cell and he's somewhere where he can get a signal.

There's an error in your method, though, John. You shouldn't use the population of the entire town, only the population of the affected areas. :-D

Of course I know that. But without a mapping of the path of the storm and the population density within it is hard to do much better.

According to Google Earth London Lane is a rather long road. But from the aerial view the population density along it seems pretty sparse. Doesn't appear to be many homes along it. Also depends on the size of the storm and the path it traversed... Did it cross the road at some point oit did it travel along it ?

At this point it may be hard to contact anyone there as the power and phones and Internet are likely down.

Further "Googling" shows that he may not have even been living at that address when the storms hit. I can not verify further because the site I wanted to access is down, at least not fully operational, but it appears that they may have started foreclosure proceedings against his property January 21 2011, or thereabouts. Like I said, the site with the details is not fully operational. He may have been at another location entirely.

Yes, he spoke a large life.

There have been some hints over the years that Mack's life wasn't all a bed of roses. If I remember correctly, he lost his son in an automobile accident some years ago, and I remember some posts of his which indicated his business and some other investments had been disappointing him. Still, he has always had a strong belief in the ability of the US economy to create wealth, and this confidence may have led him to overextend himself in the matter of property. Nevertheless, Mack is not a fool, and I remain hopeful he is safe and will soon regain his footing.

And yes, I still miss him <sniff, sniff>.

And yes again, I miss Rudi <sniff, sniff>.

FWIW, GTFO may be a smart move on his part at this point. If the value of a 300k home drops 100k, it could take a long time to catch up. He likely has enough to survive and start over. What would you have done? Ummm, duh?

Yeah, although it depends on how much he owed on it. Our place is down about $80K right now but we've already paid down over half the buying price so it makes some sense to try and ride it out. We have nowhere to go anyhow and housing prices have to start rising again some time. I hope.

See now? You're going to cause us to speculate and there is a chance that it may not be pretty.
Regourdless, in 2003 I was telling anyone who told me that they wanted to find a new career to go into some form of real estate. Property values were skyrocketing all around me. Cash strapped local farmers were sitting on a goldmine. The crappiest of quarter acre lots were going for $44K the nicer ones even more.

Call it an act of providence, an act of God (if you're of the Judeo-Christian persuasion), an act of Dog (if you're dyslexic), the Fates, Lady Luck, whatever...but the events leading up to Mack's having to abandon his home appeared to have worked in his favor. In a very big way, one might add.

When a person has something bad happen to them, a little introspection may be in order. Why did I get that flat rear tire a couple weeks ago? Because I wasn't supposed to ride my Connie up I-77 that evening, perhaps? I dodged a wreck? It makes you wonder...

Maybe the simple domino of buying one too many ART-13s, car parts, etc. started the financial tumble which may have ultimately saved Mack's life.

Ponder that, if you will.
