No CWID! No beeps, boops, chimes, weather reports, and no Betty Crocker recipes.

Yep. As long as you have a very good antenna and or good altitude.
What Bill said.

Your rig have a mode switch on it?

Try SSB. 144.210 or thereabouts.

"...no static at all..." ;)

Yeah, 2m simplex is where one can utter pg rated 4 letter words, and not worry about offending the control op. Around these parts 2m ssb/6m 50.125 ssb is a hang out for gentlemen who like to cut loose now and then.

I don't know about 2M, but the 6M noise floor has dropped quite a bit since the vhf tv shannels dropped tne NTSC signal.

I took notice of the band noise dropping on the higher bands last week. Got me pretty fired up, as I had not been on the radio very often over the past year or so.

Sigh... Need to get a 2M all mode radio eventually... Until then: VHF packet FTW :)

2 m ssb used to be alot of fun round here. As a noob getting off the repeaters was a Godsend for me on both 6 and 2.
Quite a few nets on 2m ssb and with just a yag and 10W it was easily doable. Used to chat with a bud bout 40 mi or so mi routinely.
Seems like a few were die hards about it as with 6 and alot just pop in and out. Could be true about most things I guess.

One could be quite pleasantly surprised as to how well you can do on 2 meter FM simplex.

With a directional antenna, even a small one, you'd do even better.

And I sure wish I still had my Kenwood 2 M multi-mode, but one day, I'll have one again...

I do well around town with 2 meter simplex, but I prefer 2m SSB.

Even done some 2 meter AM, for lulz.

sorry, just FM on 2, but it's still quiet on a true simplex freq.
I'm monitoring an echo link freq here in PA to keep in touch with the gang back home. All kinds of squelch popping crap going on (and none of it human voices)
Had to hit the kill switch last night, I couldn't stand it anymore. Been rather quiet so far today, touch wood.

i wouldnt mind trading the old gateway server off for a good 2 meter all mode.

The Ten Tec 10 meter to 2 meter transverter will get you there, usually for under $100 used. I have four of their transverters, 10m to 2m, 10m to 6m, 2m to 6m, and another unbuilt NIB 10m to 2m that can be modded to 220, About 8 watts out, max.

With my IC-251A 2 meter all mode, the 2m to 6m unit makes a cool "6n2" rig as a combo. The IC-251A cost me about $200, including repairs... I ran it exclusively on 6m last year, with the carrier output dropped to 5 watts. CQ QRP during openings, and did amazingly well with just a vertical. Lots of fun.

One is lucky to hear FM traffic on 2 in N Idaho. How's the noise level on 2 SSB? Lower than HF?

BTW:
I've got 2 big birdies on the 17m band on my TS 450 and NONE on the TS 440.

FT 100, 2 x FT 847 all mode 160 - 70 cm.

On 2 and 70 as well 50 MHz noise S0.

I'm more looking now for 50 MHz signals, 2 & 70 i've done for the last 34 years, so looking forward to some DX on 6 with the 5 element beam and 105 watts ;)
