View Full Version : Four ways we're still fighting... The Silver Ware

I hate the discourse this causes with me and my XYL.
1. The silverware is too long or too wide to fit into our silverware drawer silverware separator.
2. The silverware she wants is too expensive
3. The silverware is some cheap gold garbage that won't hold up and we have to throw it away because now it looks crappy.
4. The silverware looks interesting in the box, but when you get it home and hold it, it just don't feel right.
Look. Just give me regular old silverware without the frills and will hold up in the dishwasher.
Simple solution.
Get the cheap stuff for everyday use. Keep the real silver for special occasions or for display. The cheap stuff goes in the drawer and if/when it wears out, well, that's why it's the cheap stuff.

You did not mention how to talk the XYL into this plan.

I'm not the person to impress anyone with stuff, certainly not with "silverware"
Inox all around, and the wife just has to listen to me, i'm the houseman.

Flatware in packs of 4 for one dollar each at your local evil empire retailer.

Are we talking Silverware or flatware?
I'm very, very, picky about eating utensils. They are f'ing tools, damnit! If it has a distortion, bend, odd design, too small, too large, or just doesn't seem weighted or balanced right (most important)...I promptly place it in the trash. This has been a source of great consternation between the XYL and myself for years.
So, I'm not the best person to ask, though I probably should be.
...AND If anybody ever finds themselves standing next to the guy who designed the plastic spoons they use at "Wendy's"... punch that sucker for me.

Before the Chinese imposed a 5 cent wood tax on each set of chop sticks, I used to buy them in bulk packs of 48 pairs. (why not 50?) Took them with me everywhere. Sometimes I even left some behind in the 'silverware' tray at buffets.

These oddball shaped silverware or flatware makes it difficult to belong to a great silverware organization since they do not properly fit in the tray. We constantly fight the drawer to get the thing open because the silverware blocks the drawer shut. On business trips, I have picked up strange pieces from the SCV (Santa Clara Valley) area as well as some southern states. I would like to find some nice silverware sets between $18.61 and $18.65, but that is unlikely.

Pray for reconstruction of the silver market.

That $18.61 fork is the divider, unlike the knife so segregated by that bountiful platter and placed in service next to the silver spoon that will never, ever, understand.

We don't have real silverware in the family. Damn Yankees stole it. :-)

You ever had one of those moments where Miss Manners haunts relentlessly as in falling and never actually hitting the ground.
I just had one.

Tried that with forks. They were useless -- they'd bend if you just looked at 'em wrong.

Don't store an electric knife blade in a drawer like that. Sooner or later it'll be the item blocking the drawer, and once thet get bent, forget about it. NEVER will be right again.

As fleeting thought it sounds good until you try to put it into words and then it just falls apart.
You did not mention how to talk the XYL into this plan.Didn't have to. It was her idea.
She hates polishing silver.
We don't have real silverware in the family. Damn Yankees stole it. :-)Now you think with all the money that the Steinbrenner family is paying them, the team could afford to buy their own...
Just give 'em Sporks. Gawd I had those things!

I think sporks are kind of cool, but not plastic ones. This one even has a knife edge. No drawer issues.
Of course it's Scandahoovian, so it's a socialist plot, and promoted via a Yankee distribution cartel.

And no, Russ, don't come in here with some comment about blowing my own horn. I ain't into that.

Unfortunately, neither are most guys. Anatomically impossible. Almost broke my back once trying.

Got some really fun silverware a few years ago. Made by Sabre, and they're Blue Toile, know more commonly as Blue Willow or Willoware when it comes to dishes. I love Blue Willow china, and these are a great match -- I'll have to take a pic to post, can't find on on the 'net.
But I've learned a lesson about "table fashions." If you see something you love, get as much of it as you can! It really is kind of a fashion because wait a while and it won't be made or sold anymore & you'll be out of luck if you want more.
