View Full Version : Nobody's going to Dayton?

No replies to the Dayton thread over in the hamfest forum. Pity...we'd find our own kind of island somewhere.

I wish I could, but serious and busy projects at work prevail, and we'll probably be kicking into overtime in two weeks or so, with the goal of replacing all 72 overhead transponders on the toll road before July fourth. And we are already doubling the number of outdoor security cameras right now.

And so it goes.

Story of my life. This is the first year that the ducks are in enough of a row to actually make it.

I'm going. Should be leaving here late Thursday afternoon with K3AIR, coming back home late Saturday night. (Neccesary, I have a family related function that I must be at on Sunday morning)

I'm up for an eyeball sometime, somewhere. The only things I have scheduled, so to speak... I plan to be at the DX forum, and our group usually does dinner together.

...and I did get your PM, just haven't had a chance to properly answer it yet. We can talk about that here if you want!

W1GUH
04-21-2011, 09:28 AM
Sure...I'd like that.

For the eyeball part, I propose an afternoon excursion to the Air Force museum, if you've got the time Fri. or Sat.. If not, impromptu meetings always seem to work out nice. As usual, I'll have the HT on .52 (or....do we want an Island freq.?) and call periodically.

Or, if your function isn't an all-day thing I could stop by on my way home on Sunday.

Or, if your function isn't an all-day thing I could stop by on my way home on Sunday.Well, Sunday morning, the church is having an after-services gathering for all the kids getting Confirmed in the fall. Or something like that... this is what I get for marrying a shiksa. But I have to be there. (The Priest is still trying to figure me out, I don't think anyone's clued him in that I'm not only not Catholic -- that much he did figure out -- but I'm not even goyim.) I don't think we have any specific plans for the rest of the day.

So... regarding the PM, if I may digress...

There are no museums that I know of that per se cover the late steel industry in the area. The closest that I can think of is the Heinz History Center at the downtown edge of the Strip District. For railroading, I think there's some stuff on the Pennsy over in the Horseshoe Curve area of Altoona, but that's three hours or so away.

Now, that said... the HHC also has some sports exhibits and other regional items. There's several Carnegie Museums in the Oakland area, adjacent to the (U of) Pitt campus. Across the river on the North Shore is the Andy Warhol museum, and the Carnegie Science Center down by the stadiums. And if that's boring, you can blow all your Dayton money before you get there at the Casino.

Some Thursdays are afternoon games at PNC, but the Pirates are out of town the day before Hamvention.

Now, with all that said... I work downtown next door to the Convention Center, which is not even a 5 minute walk from the HHC. So if that suits you, depending on the time you pass through town, maybe lunch (or at least a cup of coffee) might be a thought. But we have plenty of time to figure that out.

That sounds awesome -- I'll shoot for that...it's extra motivation to get my sorry ass to Pittsburgh early on Thurs. I'll probably book the Holiday Inn Express that's just across the river and I've planned some downtown time.

Two of the things we saw when we were there in '58 were the US Steel building and the Alcoa Aluminum building downtown. I'm afraid to ask if they're still there. I think it was the Alcoa building that had about a 4's section of (I think) aluminum I-beam in the lobby.

W3WN
04-21-2011, 10:02 AM
Both buildings are still there. US Steel Building is now US Steel Tower (it was USX Tower for awhile) although it's been defaced by it's primary tenant, UPMC... and the Top of the Triangle restaurant is no longer there (it's now the executive suite for UPMC)

The original Alcoa building is now called the Regional Enterprise Tower, as Alcoa moved it's HQ across the river to a new structure. It's in bankruptcy (long story) and is up for sherrif's auction. Now, if you have about $12 M to spare, boy can you get a nice aluminum tower...

Tell you what... do you know where the Three Steves ARC (& sometimes some of the North Jersey DXA) usually sets up, in the flea market at the end of Row 2 (this is on the pub side of HARA)? I usually am in that area for some portions of the day, weather permitting of course, since Steve KF2TI is one of the founding Steves. We can try and pick a time to rendevous in that vicinity.

And who knows, we might even run into that former Island admin whose call is made up of my initials. Or not.

If you like aircraft history give yourself a full day to visit the National Air Force Museum (it's free). I am planning to go to look around. My brother passed away this week, and I had to spring for airfare, and helping out my now widowed sister in law. My extra funds are now drained for sure. Last year I met up with N8YX, and the lovely KD8DSG. Maybe we can take a whole section of the eatery this year.

I don't recall the deadline offhand, but since Hamvention is about a month off (as I write this), I think there's still time for them to mail the ticket to you. (Mine's sitting on my desk)

I know that you can also get tickets with the bus transportation on it, if you're parking off site and taking the shuttle over, and those are ONLY available in advance AFAIK.

I guess for me, it's more symbolic. Having the ticket in hand is a commitment to attend.

But if you don't mind spending the extra $5, or not having the bus, don't worry about it 'till you get there.

W1GUH
04-22-2011, 10:06 AM

Ive never been, and from what i hear, it has been in decline for the last few years but i would still like to go check it out one day. Right now, my wife and i just bought a house and all available money is going into that.

I was more interested in going to Visalia, actually. But ultimately, i just want to do a DXped to the carib...that may actually happen (just not now...nothing now).

So, no Dayton this year. Man, this house buying stuf is pricey.

W3WN
05-16-2011, 09:57 AM
My club normally uses our repeaters' output frequency for simplex, running PL. We're not the only ones who do so. It's convenient, as during the day we're all scattered to here & gone, but we can use it to gather together for lunch, or if someone spots something in the flea market someone else is looking for...

Forget .52

I've also seen some guys who got their hands on some of the cheapie almost-throwaway 49 MHz unlicensed HT's. I've been told that (at least on the older ones) it was a simple mod to reprogram them up to a 6 meter FM simplex frequency. Anyone know if that's true, or if someone was just pulling my rubber duckie?

Thanks for the gracious hosting and tour-guiding, Ron. Had a great time. Didn't do the Duck -- went up the incline and walked and walked, then walked back to the hotel.

Pittsburgh is extremely photogenic. I filled a memory card and had to pull out the spare. That doesn't happen very often at all.

OH, BTW...no I-beam in either building. I didn't recognize the lobby of the USS building at all, but I did, sorta, kinda, recognize the Alcoa lobby. I asked there about the I-beam, but just got a blank stare. 'Course, it's probable that the two I asked weren't even born when I saw it, in 1958!

I met K1OU there and K1OU's OM. They are headed back home. They only had a short stay. No one else did I see who had ever been on the Island. I haven't even seen W4PG. I did win a prize. I won a Palstar PM2000A Wattmeter. That was real cool. Lots of fun at the forums there. I went to the TAPR forum to check out what is new. Lots of info there.

I caught a glimpse of W0AIH as he walked by me. I spoke with the suit sat man for a while. I know I am missing a lot. I don't even know where to start at that thing. Then I get all these emails screaming about how they need more stuff done at work. And I'm like, I'm on vacation. They said everything was cool though. They have issues they need to work out there. I'm like, okay.

I have a craptastic hotel room tonight. I had a nice one in Richmond, IN last night, but Brookville,OH is to be avoided.

Dunno if I can find WN and GUH. Maybe I'll find TB tomorrow.

No...only what I can glean from Google Earth, and that's not much. As tired as I am, I don't think I'm up for trying to meet half way and taking a chance on finding something. Rats....wish it weren't so complicated.

Let's make a definite appointment to meet somewhere specific tomorrow morning at a specific time. I actually didn't go inside today -- I did the flea market first and was immediately weighed down with two DC supplies & just left.

Oh...almost forgot...price report...

So far, I only saw one item that seemed out of line, a KW Matchbox w/o meter for $300 asking.

But the PS's I got were well-priced - $25 for the HP-10, and $50 for a DC-4. That guy also had...

(major wood here over this one)

A KWM-2 + DC supply + the samsonite suitcase for it. The asking was $1200, but he said he'd be flexible. I'm probably really glad there's no way I could do that 'cuz if I could....

Saw another 'M-2 in good to very good shape for $600. So....haven't yet seen the "Hamvention Escalation" I've heard about.

I would love to meet up with youze guyz for dinner after the flea market closes. I can pick Ron up at the Hara arena, or at the UD dorm if he wants to go. Mia truck youse truck. I will make sure he will be safely returned to the dorm in one piece. My partner and i may take him to a certain dance club with bright flashy lights. If you mean 2m, i havent been on there in about 27 years. But i do 40-30-20-17 CW as often as possible. I was thinking of picking up a 2m rig, but one of the nice ones for sat work and the really crazy propagation stuff up there. I can put a few of the repeaters into the memory too, but right now, i seriously have no clue what machines they have in the valley right now.

Are you in town right now?

FT-726R/736 (if the former, make sure you get the satellite module - not all have it installed). The '726 is by far the cheapest option available here.

FT-847 - while it has HF coverage, the rig really shines on 6M and above. Will do full duplex on Modes B and J.

TS-780/790 - the latter offers Mode L coverage (1.2GHz) and will do full duplex on Modes B, J and L. Check to see that the module is installed before you buy.

IC-820/821, 910H - if interested in Mode L, get the latter - and make sure it has the 1.2GHz module installed.

You -might- consider a TS-2000X as well.

So now my Dayton cherry has been popped and I've got electrons all over the place. Screw it...leave 'em for the maid to clean up.

Sorry we couldn't meet somewhere, 'XR, maybe next year? And, guess Ron'll be posting the pic he took of me.

I'd heard it's huge, and that's pretty much an understatement. But I managed to get my OF bones around to all of it.

My favorite booth, table, whatever, was Jun's Hamcity (https://www.hamcity.com/store/pc/home.asp). That's a very excellent place to get radio stuff from; I got both my '817 & 857 over the counter there in Culver City, and a bunch of other stuff while I was in LA and their service is excellent - very competent and personable. The people working there are super and their prices beat HRO by a significant amount -- their overhead is much lower.

And their Dayton presence was true to form. They only had a small amount of space, and I didn't see any radio stuff at all, just a kind of plastic booth with dollar bills on the floor and a very hot lady -- looked like a dancer, she was very hot and very festive. Guess the booth was one of those "catch the dollar bills in the air" type setup. Didn't see the guys I usually dealt with, I'd guess the guy that was there was Jun himself. Needless to say, he was very busy so I didn't get a chance to talk with him.

Guess I really and truly am growing into OF country. The were renting those "mobility impaired" scooters and I have to admit, after traipsing around a while they were looking more and more attractive....but I'm just not ready for THAT yet!

And again today, I didn't see the severe price gouging that I'd heard about. I vaguely remember seeing a couple of items that elicited the "he's dreaming" reaction, but that wasn't common. What WAS common was a few S-line items that seemed reasonable but out of reach. Ah, well, probably glad I had to pass 'em up.

One tip is to pay more attention to the parking situation. There's two choices if you're not tailgating and can drive in. You can park for free at a mall and take a shuttle bus, or park "kind of" close for five or ten bucks. That's not really bad, but was shocking to encounter for the first time.

Just not used to a certain (what I believe is) a certain mid-western mindset. There were a few squad cars around the arena with their lights flashing for traffic control -- they were locals; not Dayton, but some suburb. I know that the fact that they were very obviously armed is just how they do things out here, but I couldn't help but wonder why such a display of force at a hamfest? Even in NYC, cops directing traffic don't have that "I'm a badass" look (In know they really aren't - they're just doing their job, but still...)" and a lot of the time they aren't even armed. Just different regional customs, I suppose. Or maybe a bunch of hams is considered dangerous? At least they weren't wearing gas maks!

I saw a couple of people I know from local hamfests. One was Pete, the Manual Man (http://www.manualman.com/). He makes good manual repros, and I ordered manuals for the Heath twins I'm breathing life into. The other vendor I knew is one of those with a big setup selling small parts. He's got a gazillion of them & they're very high quality parts for great prices. He was telling me the crazy things that happen in Dayton like people leaving their radios and wallets behind. Also told me about a Korean who left behind a paper sack full of money, who eventually came running back in a panic. Takes all kinds!

Leaving early in the morning. Plans are right after breakfast about 6:30, but it's also possible that I'll wake up earlier and get on the road about four. Don't really know right now, but I'm coming down with "get-home-itis" and might skip breakfast here and wait till I've put a couple hundred miles behind me on the interstate. In any event, I'll be riding with ECARS (7255) (http://www.ecars7255.com/) a lot of the time. How's about some of you checking in & hooking-up on the air? I'll make a point of listening at the "top of the hour" and at the :30 mark. 40 was excellent on the way out, and should be in good shape tomorrow. Also, some of the motivation for leaving in the wee hours is to work 75 from the mobile. Don't get a lot of chance to do that.
[edit] ECARS usually starts around 7:30 Eastern time.

Finally, our Furry maybe more than he lets on. He's got 3/5 of his call in big letters on top of a tall building in Pittsburgh! I'll post a pic later.

Nah.

Had a great time. XR, sorry we didn't hook up, my cell phone was acting a little goofy inside the building, and I kept forgetting to keep my HT on.

But enough of that.

There was an inside booth (over by Vibroplex) for a small local company called Jericho Prints. They were imprinting images on hats, coffee mugs, badges, etc. (They made my "new" Hallicrafters call hat, for one). They do shirts as well, although I don't think they did many there.

Husband and wife (and two cute kids who played under the tables all day, either watching a DVD or playing with the real money) running a little side business. Both hams, although I didn't note the calls.

ANYWAY... If anyone wants an Island name badge or logo, they might be worth checking into. (Badges were $14 -- shipped). www.jerichoprints.com (http://www.jerichoprints.com), although she said something to someone else about the site needing an update.

Just saying...

Awesome! Just the kind of list i was looking for, thanks. I like the idea of HF and 6-n-up mixed in one rig. Is that a full power rig, or am i thinking of the 817?

I am definately interested in 6m and 2m dxing, but i wouldnt complain if all the other freqs came with it. Like i said before, i havent been above 10m in almost 3 decades so as far as that goes, im a noob.
