A really good, fire-roasted hot dog with relish, Catsup/ketchup/whatever the hell you want to call it, and mustard. Throw some kettle chips on there with some potato salad and see what happens.

May need to do this.

Got a couple Coney Dogs at a little restaurant down the street from us. First time in years.

Wouldn't want to live on them but as a treat, such dogs are nice.

I don't have a fire pit right now, or a safe place to put one... but we can always throw some wood instead of charcoal into the Weber.

You bring the buns & condiments, I'll take care of the frankfurters.

Just did some here Monday evening. My grand-niece is spending the week here, and is a hotdog machine. Either Kunzler Grill Franks or Ballpark Beef, preferably on a potato roll, disappear into this kid like fingerlings into a bull bass. I like to do them on the outdoor grill so that they start to swell and the skin crusts -- just before it begins to go black. Yellow mustard, dill relish and minced onion for me.

Looking forward to that one...

I don't mind a little black, as long as they're not completely burned. Of course, Lucy Furr doesn't mind those at all.

Ballpark Beef are very good. Hebrew National are better.

That said, IMHO, cooking over a campfire is best; over charcoal outdoors a very close second. Yet my family prefers to boil them. Ugh!

Used to do Hebrew National all the time til I got hooked on Nathan's. Never did get into Oscar Meyer.I've had Nathan's at an actual Nathan's in Greenwich Village, back in my days of misspent youth. The stuff they sell in the stores today... they're not bad, I've certainly had worse, but the taste just is not the same.

There used to be a local chain called Hot Diggity Dogs. I don't know where they got their all-beef franks, but for a chain, they were pretty good. My ex worked with the owner's wife, and when the family moved to Florida, they sold the local chain... and IIRC they were gone within about 9 months. Shame.

PNC Park, and before it 3 Rivers Ashtray, er, Stadium used to sell Hebrew National footlongs. A couple of years ago, Aramark switched to a different brand. You can taste the difference. They're back to Hebrew National this year, but you have to search for them.

A good frankfurter is worth the search. Otherwise, you're just eating a cheap (and I do mean cheap) collection of ground up meat leftovers and byproducts in a casing.

Yea, well, any hot dog at a baseball game is the BEST! Brand, cooking method, whatever make no difference. The "condiment" of a baseball game makes 'em a gourmet treat. Same for the beer.

Especially when they're sold by a guy walking through the stands yelling,"

"Red Hots!!!! Get yer red hot hot dogs here!!!" Then, fish the dogs out of hot (stagnant?) water & put 'em on a bun & smear 'em with mustdard.

The dogs I remember fondly were the still-connected links from the butcher shop.

Heywood Floyd (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001702/): I'd love a hot dog.
Walter Curnow (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001475/): Astrodome. Good hot dogs there.
Heywood Floyd (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001702/): Astrodome? You can't grow a good hot dog indoors. Yankee Stadium. September. The hot dogs have been boiling since opening day in April. Now that's a hot dog.
Walter Curnow (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001475/): The yellow mustard or the darker kind?
Heywood Floyd (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001702/): The darker kind.
Walter Curnow (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001475/): Very important.

I'm not sure they still sell hot dogs at Yankee Stadium anymore, what with all the fancy BS!!!!!

But if they do, the just GOTTA cost at least $15.00 plus a coupla bucks for each condiment.

Agree. Nathan's at Nathan's was one thing, but I won't pay the price for them in a supermarket.

Hebrew Nationals are good, but, again, I am a cheap SOB. Ballpark Beef at Costco, four eight-packs for less than two of the HN in a super. Just can't bring myself to shuck the shekels.

Theres definately something old school and delicious about a charred campfire dog. The same with chocolate chip cookies, the flavor changes with the varying stages of cooking...i love them both well done! Everyone likes both of these things differently, some like their franks boiled, others like them pan cooked, i love a good old fire with wood.

Same deal with marshmallows. I won't normally eat one but put it on a stick over a campfire until it turns a nice golden brown then sandwich it between two graham crackers and a piece of a Hershey Bar and it's a whole different ball game.

They're not far from the same these days. Nathan's sells what's in the grocers these days. No more round Knishes though. Miss them. Thanks for the idea. I think I'll take the train to Coney Island and get a few with their great fries.

Back in the '70s, I used to spend a lot of time in the Nathan's that used to be in Times Square (I think it was on 43rd St). Nobody seems to remember this place. Every now and then things would get out of hand and it would turn into a crime scene. I remember being famished after going to ATS and buying franks, fries and a Coke while gingerly walking around the crime scene and the bodily fluids on the floor. Now THAT was Times Square.

The days when the tourists were so busy looking up at the neon lights of Times Square (think Guys & Dolls) that they didn't always notice the filth, crime, and other general seediness of the area. Now it looks like a Disneyfied theme park... and tourist trap.

I haven't had a good knish since we left Livingston... and Cohen's Knishes behind. I know that the restaurant chain is long gone, but I did come across something a few months back that the parent company (now under a different name) is now making frozen foods and stilll provides them.

And we may as well get into the profound, existential question surrounding hot dogs.

Why are hot dogs 10 to a pkg. (7 in the case of HN), and buns 8 to a pkg.?

This question has mystified mystics since there WERE hot dogs.

It's a food conglomerate plot.

You must buy 4 packages of dogs and 5 of the buns to reach parity, at 40.

This question has mystified mystics since there WERE hot dogs.Locally, most packages of hot dogs are 8 to a pack, so parity has been achieved.

Now, some of the "premium" packages of sausages (not just hot dogs), including bratwurst and so forth, come 4 to 6 in a pack as well. Just to confuse matters.
