I have to ask...why?

You got me. It's just bog-standard white box PC hardware running Ubuntu Linux stuffed into a case that looks very similar to an old Commodore 64. I see no point in it at all.

I'd take one for free just to add to my geek points, but can't see why anyone would pay $600 for the novelty.

Like Yogurt said "It's not the box office, it's all in the maaaketing" Now who wouldn't want a piece of the Enterprise NCC-1701?

Maybe off topic but I can't resist throwing in an Easter egg or two. Have you ever wondered about those conduits labeled GNDN followed by a number? According to John Jefferies, one of the set designers GNDN stands for goes nowhere does nothing. Here's the second egg, the Jefferies tubes.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled useless computer discussion.

I don;t see the point either. Why would I want that when I have the real thing.

The original probably still works better.

I found it HILAROUS that nailing the C64 tan color was hard.

And now, a silly memory of a popular C64 (and Apple IIc) game... BC's Quest for Tires. (http://youtu.be/1BiMYjVvhxE) Jump Sucker!
