I have been looking for a set of weights. What I am looking for are iron weights with a set of at least 110-120 lbs of iron plates. The clamps are optional. In high school we never used the clamps, we just set the weights on the bar and kept it steady. What is a good price these days for a 110-120 lb iron barbell/dumbell set ? I porefer the iron weights and not the sand,

Thanks... I'll check it out. We used to have paragon sports in Manhattan but not sure of they are in business anymore.

are you kidding? I won't touch anything over 20 pounds. And that's when I'm feeling at my peak.

Check the classifieds every spring, and summoer for gym equipment that outlasted the new year's resolution. At my last 2 gyms, it was a chuckle to see it packed to the gills the first 2 weeks of January. Things always returned to 'normal' by the end of February.

John,

Garage sales.

Your company's barter board.

Craigslist.

Etc.

Heck, if you were close enough to me I would give a spare set of cast-iron free weights plus bars to you. As it stands, shipping something that heavy would murder your wallet.

Thoughts: Unless you're just planning to tone, always buy big. Namely, consider a 300lb Olympic-type (large diameter hole) set. I can guarantee you'll eventually outgrow even that much if you stick to a training regimen.

My local gym has roughly 5 tons of free weights (plates, barbells, etc) and when the place is busy even that is not enough to accommodate everybody. The owner and the head coach chuckled a bit when I asked about some of the isolation machines prior to joining: "Is that all the weight they're capable of implementing?"

They aren't laughing now - in just under 9 months I've maxed the weight stacks out on three of them (all Matrix equipment) and am at 95% on 2/3 of the others. This for sets - not single reps, by the way. Given the current pace, in about a year I'll have to find another gym...or beg the owner to fork over the $$$ for upgraded stacks.

I have 3, 5 and 8 that I use to condition my arm and shoulder for bullseye; rarely use the eight. I like the rubberized type best.
