I have ordered many items from Tiger Direct, including the laptop on which I am now typing this post. I ordered all of the components for a new desktop about two years ago, and I have regularly bought drives and other items from them without complaint, hassle or problem. I have been very satisfied with my dealings with TD.

The only warnings I might add are that you should read very carefully the description of what you plan to buy; TD sells many refurbished items, and that might be a factor in your decision; and TD sells many "obsolete" products that have been superseded by newer models and now are being offered at discount. It will be labeled as such if it is a refurbished item, but not necessarily if it is an outdated model. Google is your friend on checking how new any model of camera is, and the "customer reviews" listed on TD are often revealing of potential problems.

The last camera I bought -- a new Canon T2i -- was purchased through Amazon.com from Samy's Camera in CA. You might go through the list of what Amazon offers by way of comparison.

Whatever you end up doing, I hope it ends happily.

Not always the cheapest around, and as Albert said below, they do offer lots of "refurbs", and items that are discontinued, or are about to be.

If you know exactly what you are buying, I think they are the best out there overall.

Got tired looking for a decent camera and decided to get this to replace the brick I now have, it's supposed to be new. One reviewer said it's perfect for his 8 yr old daughter, so I figured I'd eventually learn how to use it. Looked at one at Office Max today, seems like a decent cheapie for the money.
It takes AA batteries, I have rechargeable AAs out the kazoo.
It's a done deal. Shipping was $2.

Maybe some day I'll upgrade.

As far as cameras go, the webcam on this thing is a 640x480 set for 256 colors, and that is pushing it. ;)
I have a device I got that has 2 cameras on board each of what does far better than this, and we are talking 0.3 Megapixels.
So, if I ran out and bought something with even one Megapixel on it there would be a massive improvement.
But 14 Megapixels? not going to happen!

I had a problem only one time. They sent me a prepaid box to ship it back. They promptly sent another tower/P5 PS. I have bought many other pc parts, boards, no other issues. Like Ebay, never been burned.

That's a fine P&S, Bill. I guess you know you'll need a giant memory card that 14MP sensor. It will be worth it though. I personally don't like using lesser resolutions at the camera end. If need be, I resize later. I had a Nikon that recorded in both full rez and smaller rez at the same time for easy processing at home later or on the laptop or whatever.

I've been really happy with my Sanyo VPC-T1495, it was the on sale at Wally World two months ago for $79.

It does HD movies, has image stabilization, and decent "auto settings". And you can use manual settings.

Pretty versatile, but it's not high end at all. Almost all the point and shoot cameras at $100 +/- are OK.

Mine is blue. They seem to be hard to find right now. Hmmmm.

What 2 to 4 gig SD card is a good one? Are there some for photos & some for other data?

I've been using Sandisk UltraII for a while now. I think the only differences are in the read/write speeds. If you get an HDHC card, make sure your machine is up to date enough to read it.
Like high end audio stuff, you can walk into a camera shop and dump a metric shit ton on a "professional" memory card. I think it's hype.
However, since you are going with 14MP, I would would recommend a minimum 8GB card. YMMV.

I have to disagree with Charles to an extent. I don't believe you need more than 4GB, and even that should hold a large number of shots even at 14MP. I am shooting at 18MP and I shoot raw file format (about 7MB each) and can fit hundreds of shots in a 4GB card. The eight will, of course, hold roughly twice the number (duh!). You will likely be shooting jpeg files, and will be able to "squeeze" more than a thousand such shots onto a single 4GB card.

What I consider to be more important is the class of the SD card you choose. Go to at least a Class 6 card -- better yet, a Class 10 card. Look very carefully at the label on the card; it will tell you what class card it is. If no class is cited, don't buy it. It may be very cheap, but it may also be a disappointment when you want to shoot fast. The class is a reflection of the speed with which the camera can move the photo file from the sensor to the card. When you're moving lots of pixels, the speed becomes important because the camera may not shoot bursts. If, as with many lower-cost cameras, you are limited to shooting one shot at a time, the camera will not take another until the file has been transferred to the card. Class 6 and 10 cards are much costlier than the lower rated cards. The speed of the card also helps when you shoot video files.

Rechargeable AAs are a good idea, but don't overlook the newer Lithium AAs. They, too, are expensive, but they yield very high capacity for a large number of shots. Shooting HD video can suck batteries dry pretty quickly. A pair in your pocket or bag makes a good backup for when you are not able to recharge the others.

Thanks for the tip on the SD cards Albie. That may explain a few things with our "new" camera. I need to buy a new card for it anyway, so I'll look for a Class 10 one.

One comment on batteries: Look very carefully at what's available. When we got the Canon SX-120 last year, it had been discounted because it was "last year's model." "This year's model" was basically the same camera, only it took a proprietary Lithium Ion battery pack; the SX-120 takes double "A" batteries. Do we go through more than a few batteries? Yes, I always keep at least one spare set on hand. But -- to get a spare, the LiON pack cost $55. And what are you going to do when you're out somewhere and need another battery -- especially when you don't have a spare handy? There's been more than a few times that I've been able to stop at a 7-11 and buy spare batteries, and be back "in business" within moments.

Just food for thought.

The micros are a good choice; they are adaptable to a far wider range of tasks, including in many modern camera-phones. You pay a premium, of course, but if you also have other gear that uses the micros the added cost can be worth it.

I had some pro photographer take some wedding pictures a while back, he was using the cheap off-brand cards sold at Fry's.
One failed and he was told that I could recover the data, something I do not do on a commercial basis.
He went as far as to talk to my employer to try and cut a deal, he did not want to pay the $150 or so that recovery costs.
In the end he was taken to court by the bride and groom and ended up having to turn over the media and pay.
Moral of the story, flash memory does fail, does "wear" out.
Sometimes it can be recovered, everything on the card gets extracted, and if the card is not working correctly this can be a real mess, much like a hard drive recovery.
At that point figure on at least a few hours trying to put everything back in order.
Frequently unbricking a radio takes less effort.

What's really cool about these new point and shoot cameras is you can keep it handy.

Sunrise and sunset out here can be pretty spectacular, and I always get one or the other on my usual work shifts. Amusing wildlife too. Cell phone cameras suck for the most part, so it's nice to have something that will take a decent picture.

The fire wire interface card I got for my Flex 3000 radio came with some decent video editing software, need a bigger SD card unless I keep my laptop handy. A high end 32GB SDHC card is about the same price as the camera. That figures. :lol:

what is the switch for?
If you push it down it locks the card from being read or written on. It's kind of stupid though. I also don't understand the original intent behind that switch.

Been looking at some more up to date cards. I should get a Sandisk ExtremeIII if I want to "upgrade." It is non SDHC. It is SD only. My going on 5 year old Nikon D50 does not recognize SDHC. My current cards are probably class 4 but 5 years ago I don't think they used that class denominator, at least not to my knowledge.

First off, the switch is a write protect, just like on floppies, you can still read it.
And on the Nikon D50, the maximum frame rate is 2.5 seconds, class 6 is faster than the camera.
Class 4 is fast enough, Sandisk ultra II, class 6 might give you a little headroom but anything faster is a waste.
Yes, SD, with an upper limit of 4GB is what you use in that thing.
