Why do you have to call for a price of a new rig? I am looking for a new HF rig and every catalog that comes in always want you to call them for a price.

If I have to call, I can't afford it and I don't need it. I wouldn't order any big ticket things from AES anyway. I'd have to pay the tax. I can get the same things from HRO and pay no sales tax.

Check out Jun's Hamcity (http://www.hamcity.com/store/pc/home.asp). That's pretty much a no BS place to business -- bought lots from them in person & the guys working there are great AND his prices are usually significantly better than other places. He's got way low overhead; pretty much just a counter.

I highly recommend them.

Because prices change often enough during the year that they'd have to print a new catalog about 4-6 times a year.

Rebates and sales from the manufacturers happen before the catalog gets reprinted.

And besides, a sales professional really wants to stroke your Ham Ego, and do the wallet reach around.

Last three rigs I bought (FTM-10SRs) were from HamCity - got them for $150-$200 under list. Similar savings were had with all the accessories I ordered.

I guess it is much like the finer clothing stores. They don't put price tags on the merchandise, if you have to ask you cannot afford it.

I'm not going to complain. AES makes a very nice catalog when compared head to head to HRO. Then there is the fact that I like looking at pretty pictures of radio porn and the specs and other things are right there. Then, any other questions, I go to the website. Well, I go to many.

Ham radio catalogs are about the best crapper reading.

Hello.

Universal Radio has a nice website that has prices.
But, yes, as was pointed out, prices change.

I've got some new porn ordered.
Should be here any day.
At least I can afford to "Look"

Hello.

I guess there must be something wrong with me, I like simple radios that are rugged and goof proof.
A classic example of what I really like is the Kachina, not really a SDR radio, but it can be run off just about any computer, and the more powerful the computer, the more features that can be added.
However, it can be operated with a Radio Shack model 101 if need be.
Knobs? the thing I do not like about the FT-897 is that giant knob!
Modern radios are all solid state encoder based, marine radios had a near steering wheel that was connected to a common tuning shaft, you turned everything in 3 cabinets from one box manually.
But if one puts the FT-897 in a steel cage like the CAP did it is not a bad radio.
