Getting info from a dead HD to a different HD

I have a friend that has a "Dead" hard drive. He wants to get some old pictures off of it. He has another computer that he tried to connect it to. Problem: one is IDE the other is SATA.

Is there any interface that will allow him to hook the hard drive for use on the different style computer? SATA to IDE

If the drive is indeed "dead", I don't think he's gonna get any data off it. If it's just "dying," then most MoBoards still have an IDE header on them somewhere even it's it's not being used. All need needs is the IDE ribbon cable from his old computer.

He said that it starts to boot up and goes to the blue screen. I sent him the link to the gizmo, he is going to CompUSA to see if they have one.

Freezer trick before transfer if it's not yet dead.

Just before you are ready to plug it in, place HD in a ziplock bag and place in freezer for about 8 minutes. +/- depending on freezer.
This will make a dying HD more compliant and hold on to life a little longer while you extract data. How does it work? I don't know.

Yea, the freezer trick is a good one.

If it won't boot at all after doing it, wait 10-15 minutes for it to warm up a little.

As long as the system recognizes it and you're using it a storage only drive. I've had the OS die on a drive, die beyond fixing it any other way than a full reformat. Anyway, you can still pull those files off of it. Pictures, documents and data that does not deal with the OS.

If the freezer + imaging program doesn't work, try the "drop trick". Drop the HD from about 2 ft off a table. Then try imaging it. Sometimes the heads get stuck in parked positions.

Imaging a dead drive will usually work, but take a loooong time. I've had a drive take about 3 days to finish imaging, but it worked.

If it will not image at all, On Track does data recovery. $500 for them to look at it and give you an estimate. I've never seen an estimate come back for less than $5000 though (The $500 gets applied to the actual work, though).

In the end, when all is said and done, order a small clock kit and turn the HD into a lovely wall or desk clock.
